Random things

I don’t normally respond to chain letters and Internet memes, so here’s a page to catch them all.

For Eileen and Owen - random things:

1. As a child, I hid behind the sofa if I heard the Doctor Who theme tune (we had an LP of children’s TV theme tunes and my parents had to skip that track every time)!
2. When I was 9 and a quarter years old (the quarter was important!), I came second in the Institute of Advanced Motoring’s (IAM) road sign recognition competition at the Northampton Town Show. Because I’d put my age of the entry form and I was only beaten on the last day of the competition, they were so impressed that they wrote and sent me some book tokens.
3. My first car was a Ford Escort MK3 van (and the IAM would have been appalled to see how I drove it).
4. My favourite album of all time is U2’s The Joshua Tree (but as a teenager I was a Simple Minds fan and I discovered U2 too late to see the Joshua Tree tour). These days I listen to all sorts of music but my current favourite group is Faithless.
5. My favourite films are probably Human Traffic and Heat (but there are many others that I could have named here instead).
6. After school, I considered training as an architect but was put off by the 7 years of study. These days, I’d like to do something creative (like web design or photography) but mortgage commitments make it too hard to go back and start my career all over again.
7. I cut short my plans for life in Australia in order to return to the UK and settle down with Mrs W.
8. I sometimes exhibit tendencies towards grumpy old man behaviour and rarely respond to chain e-mails/Internet memes.

For Keni - four things:

• Walking in one of the UK’s National Parks.
