Last week I blogged about configuring WPAD for Internet Explorer clients. Since then I’ve come across some more information that might be useful:
- For those writing proxy autoconfiguration (.PAC) files, Chapter 26 of the Internet Explorer Resource Kit details the various JavaScript functions that are available for use.
- There’s a who load more useful information in the Windows IT Professional magazine configuring ISA Server clients article and in the ISAServer.org general ISA Server configuration article.
- Microsoft knowledge base article 900935 describes a tool called proxycfg.exe, which can be used to set proxy settings in the registry, e.g. if WPAD is not possible, or is not working.
- Microsoft knowledge base article 271361 describes a feature called automatic proxy caching, designed to prevent the use of different proxies to gain access to the same web server.
One more link that came in useful a couple of days back when I was setting up ISA Server 2006 as a proxy server – how to create the DHCP option 252 configuration.
It’s also worth noting that WPAD is not limited to Windows clients – I have a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5 server which is using WPAD in the connection preferences for Mozilla Firefox.
