{"id":1015,"date":"2008-03-13T12:17:22","date_gmt":"2008-03-13T12:17:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/03\/some-more-on-using-active-directory-for-linuxmac-os-x-user-authentication.htm"},"modified":"2008-03-13T12:17:22","modified_gmt":"2008-03-13T12:17:22","slug":"some-more-on-using-active-directory-for-linuxmac-os-x-user-authentication","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/03\/some-more-on-using-active-directory-for-linuxmac-os-x-user-authentication.htm","title":{"rendered":"Some more on using Active Directory for Linux\/Mac OS X user authentication"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year I wrote a post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/05\/using-active-directory-to-authenticate-users-on-a-linux-computer.htm\">using Microsoft Active Directory (AD) to authenticate users on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) computer<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/02\/using-active-directory-to-authenticate-users-on-a-mac-os-x-computer.htm\">a few weeks back I followed it up for Mac OS X<\/a>).  This week, I&#8217;ve been re-visiting that subject, as I built a new FTP server at home and wanted to use AD for authentication.<\/p>\n<p>In the process, I came across a couple of extra resources that might be useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you want to avoid entering the logon name as <em>domainname<\/em>\\<em>username<\/em>, then <a href=\"http:\/\/spiralbound.net\/2007\/04\/11\/rhel-winbind-authentication-against-active-directory\">it is possible to configure a default domain for Winbind to use<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Ubuntu documentation has a useful guide for <a href=\"https:\/\/help.ubuntu.com\/community\/ActiveDirectoryWinbindHowto\">adding a Ubuntu box to an AD domain and using AD for authentication<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As I was using an almost-new AD (not the old one that I have been tweaking for years), I found that RHEL5 (and Mac OS X 10.5) did not need me to <a href=\"http:\/\/technet2.microsoft.com\/WindowsServer\/en\/library\/1a2546ce-b45a-4a2d-a0c9-082e444f1fe81033.mspx?mfr=true\">disable digital signing of communications<\/a> as recent versions of Samba include client side signing.  <a href=\"http:\/\/us4.samba.org\/samba\/docs\/man\/Samba-HOWTO-Collection\/domain-member.html\">The Samba documentation suggests that it is necessary to set <code>client use spnego = yes<\/code> in smb.conf when authenticating against a Windows Server 2003 domain controller<\/a> but I did not find that to be the case with Samba v3.0.23c and Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 (perhaps that is the default?).<\/p>\n<p>The following notes may also be useful:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>SSH does not require any further configuration but if Samba is configured to use the default separator for <em>domainname<\/em> and <em>username<\/em> (\\) then you will need to escape it &#8211; so the connection command would be <code>ssh <em>domainname<\/em>\\<em>username<\/em>@<em>hostname<\/em><\/code>.<\/li>\n<li>This also works for FTP (<code>ftp <em>domainname<\/em>\\<em>username<\/em>@<em>hostname<\/em><\/code>) but I&#8217;ve not found a way to make a simple <code>ftp <em>hostname<\/em><\/code> use AD for authentication.<\/li>\n<li>Even though Linux\/Unix usernames are case-sensitive, Windows ones are not, so any combination of lower and upper case is valid for <em>domainname<\/em>\\<em>username<\/em>.
