{"id":1086,"date":"2008-05-30T09:25:54","date_gmt":"2008-05-30T09:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/05\/a-tale-of-two-xml-document-formats.htm"},"modified":"2008-06-26T10:13:27","modified_gmt":"2008-06-26T10:13:27","slug":"a-tale-of-two-xml-document-formats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/05\/a-tale-of-two-xml-document-formats.htm","title":{"rendered":"A tale of two XML document formats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Once upon a time, there were two competing standards for XML-based document formats.  <a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/aa338205.aspx\">The big bad company that everybody loves to hate created an XML-based format for its Office Suite<\/a> and called it <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Office_Open_XML\">Office Open XML (OOXML &#8211; also referred to as OpenXML)<\/a>, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/06\/working-with-openxml-document-formats-in-office-2003.htm\">producing converters for the many business customers that were working with old formats<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/07\/open-xml-documents-driving-me-insane-on-the-mac.htm\">except if they used a version of Office for a competing operating system<\/a>).  Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasis-open.org\/\">some guys who like to share things<\/a> (because all well-brought-up children know that sharing is <em>A Good Thing<\/em>) had already decided that the big bad company&#8217;s idea was too proprietary and developed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oasis-open.org\/committees\/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=office\">a competing XML document standard called the Open Document Format (ODF)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The big bad company had been told off many times for not playing nicely and they wanted to show everyone how they were changing their ways, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/02\/microsofts-open-xml-document-formats.htm\">they made Open XML an open standard and submitted the format to some standards bodies<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ecma-international.org\/news\/PressReleases\/PR_TC45_Dec2006.htm\">One of the standards bodies was happy to endorse the format<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/press\/2008\/apr08\/04-01OpenXMLVotePR.mspx\">the biggest and most relevant of the standards bodies took its time, initially favouring the other format, even though the big bad company&#8217;s software had become the de facto standard in many markets around the world<\/a>.  Eventually both OpenXML and ODF were agreed as standards, allowing everybody to be confused by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/05\/nice-thing-about-standards-is-that.htm\">proliferation of so-called &#8220;standard&#8221; document formats<\/a> with similar names.<\/p>\n<p>When the big bad company heard that their document format had been approved, they were very happy and decided that competing formats were no longer a threat.  They were concerned that customers would be confused by the various standards with similar names and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/Presspass\/press\/2008\/may08\/05-21ExpandedFormatsPR.mspx\">announced that they would include support for competing formats in the next service pack for their Office suite<\/a> &#8211; even allowing users to select a competing standard as the default.  They also said they would include support for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adobe.com\/products\/acrobat\/adobepdf.html\">a well known portable document format (PDF)<\/a> that competes with their own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/08\/metro-read-all-about-it.htm\">XML paper specification (XPS) portable format<\/a>, despite previously having had to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.msdn.com\/brian_jones\/archive\/2006\/06\/02\/613702.aspx\">remove PDF support from their Office suite because the company that owned the format threatened to sue them<\/a> (they had already made it available as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/07\/microsoft-office-save-as-pdf-or-xps.htm\">a free plug-in<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Everyone was happy.  Or nearly everyone was.  The <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-10784_3-9950148-7.html\">European Union said it would be investigating whether the new file format support was good for consumers<\/a> (they don&#8217;t like the big bad company).  And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.noooxml.org\/\">some of the guys who say they like to share everything were unhappy because the big bad company was sharing with them and they didn&#8217;t <em>really<\/em> want to play<\/a>.  This made the big bad company very sad because it wasn&#8217;t really such a bad company and most of the people who work there just want to write great software.
