{"id":1089,"date":"2008-06-02T23:15:57","date_gmt":"2008-06-02T23:15:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/podcasts"},"modified":"2012-09-18T14:25:20","modified_gmt":"2012-09-18T13:25:20","slug":"podcasts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/06\/podcasts.htm","title":{"rendered":"Podcasts I listen to\/watch (revisited)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s certainly not a directory, but here&#8217;s a list of what I consider to be good for keeping up with tech news and general geekiness and what&#8217;s been chopped from my iTunes because it went downhill&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s hot?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio\/podcasts\/archers\/\">The Archers<\/a> &#8211; the only soap opera worth bothing with!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio\/podcasts\/fricomedy\/\">Friday Night Comedy from the BBC<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/08\/bbc-iplayer-seems-to-work-well-on-windows-xp-but-what-about-the-rest-of-us.htm\">Taking over the Now Show&#8217;s feed<\/a>, I get the News Quiz or the Now Show (whichever is in season), delivered to me automatically. Just a shame that licencing restrictions mean any commercial music is removed from the podcast version&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/technology\/series\/techweekly\">Guardian Tech Weekly<\/a> &#8211; as the title suggest, a weekly technology update from The Gruniad. Definitely worth a listen.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/revision3.com\/tekzilla\/\">Tekzilla<\/a>. 1 minute daily tips with an end-of week tech magazine show.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/podcast\">Wired UK Podcast<\/a> &#8211; a bit geeky at times and a bit too consumer-focused, but I like it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And what&#8217;s not?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/news\/main.jhtml?xml=\/news\/exclusions\/supplements\/clive\/nosplit\/index.xml&amp;_requestid=600531\">The Anderson Tapes<\/a>. Clive Anderson&#8217;s weekly podcast for the Telegraph.<\/del> Only ran for one series and sometimes the humour was a little too predictable.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thedigitalstory.com\/\">The Digital Story<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.storyphoto.com\/\">Derek Story<\/a> has a lot of advice but I also have a stack of unlistened episodes&#8230;<\/del> I never did manage to get into this one.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2009-01-17T01:32:29+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twit.tv\/FLOSS\">FLOSS Weekly<\/a>. Interesting interviews with pioneers and leaders from the world of open source software.<\/del> Unfortunately Leo Laporte butts in a little too often.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2009-01-17T01:32:29+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/podcast.ft.com\/\">FT Digital Business podcast<\/a>. This one&#8217;s a new one on me&#8230; could turn out to be an interesting insight into the world of business IT.<\/del> Probably really interesting but I have too many podcasts to listen to and so little time.<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/ilifezone.com\/\">iLifeZone<\/a>. Podcast about the iApps on the Mac.<\/del> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/12\/upgrading-my-mac-to-run-vista.htm\">Too many of Scott Bourne&#8217;s Mac fanboy views<\/a>. Too much Mac elitism.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2009-01-17T01:32:29+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio\/podcasts\/worldbiz\/\">In Business<\/a>. Interesting insight into global business issues.<\/del> Interesting, but another podcast that I never found enough time to listen to regularly.<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/ambermac.typepad.com\/ambermac\/inside_the_net\/\">Inside the Net<\/a><\/del>. <a href=\"http:\/\/ambermac.com\/\">Amber MacArthur<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/leoville.com\/\">Leo Laporte<\/a> used to interview lots of interesting Web 2.0 people. Then it went over to a live format (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twit.tv\/natn\">Net at Night<\/a>) and I stopped listening.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2008-09-19T12:53:39+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixelcorps.tv\/macbreak_tech\">MacBreak Tech<\/a>. Sometimes interesting. Sometimes dull. Sometimes displaying complete ignorance for anything not developed in Cupertino and given a fancy UI.<\/del> Changed names to Inside the Black Box and then stopped.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pixelcorps.tv\/macbreak\">MacBreak<\/a>. Pretty cool video podcast with lots of tips and tricks.<\/del> I prefer Tekzilla though&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2009-01-17T01:32:29+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twit.tv\/MBW\">MacBreak Weekly<\/a>. This one nearly got the chop for getting too long and being too fanboyish. Still there for the time being but on probation&#8230;<\/del> Would be cool if it was just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.merlinmann.com\/\">Merlin Mann<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/alexlindsay.vox.com\/\">Alex Lindsay<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cwob.com\/\">Andy Ihnatko<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.macformat.co.uk\/?catname=\/Podcast\">MacFormat &#8211; This Week<\/a>. A bi-weekly podcast with news, reviews and tech tips from the world of the Macintosh.<\/del> Saved me from reading the print magazine, which is probably why they stopped producing it!<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.makezine.com\/podcast\/\">MAKE Magazine podcast<\/a>.<\/del> Still waiting for me to find the time to watch some episodes&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\">Pad Addicts. British iPad podcast<\/del>. Terrible production and presenters lacked any kind of authority. Imagine Chris Moyles ranting on about the iPad, but worse.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revision3.com\/pixelperfect\/\">PixelPerfect<\/a>.<\/del> Still waiting for me to find the time to watch some episodes&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/gruntmedia.com\/\">Podgrunt<\/a><\/del>. It promised to tell us how to create podcasts but sadly it never got past the first episode.<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/www.redhat.com\/magazine\/podcast.xml\">Red Hat Magazine<\/a><\/del>. A bi-monthly podcast that promised much from the world of open source but stopped being updated in November 2006.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twit.tv\/SN\">Security Now<\/a>. Interesting reviews of security issues. Sometimes a bit ignorant to enterprise IT issues &#8211; but certainly worth a listen for <a href=\"http:\/\/grc.com\/\">Steve Gibson<\/a>&#8216;s view on security.<\/del> Leo Laporte drove me mad &#8211; I had to stop listening to this.<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/slashdotreview.com\/\">Slashdot Review<\/a>. A roundup of the day&#8217;s news from Slashdot<\/del> but it sent me to sleep&#8230; (not good whilst driving!)<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/revision3.com\/systm\/\">Systm<\/a>. A cool video podcast featuring loads of tech DIY projects. Originally started by Kevin Rose (of Digg fame), then off air for a while but came back to our screens in May 2007.<\/del> Disappeared again.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twipphoto.com\/\">This Week In Photography<\/a>. Great digital photography podcast with some interesting guests. Even Scott Bourne&#8217;s not too annoying on this one and lots of interesting videos in the feed between the weekly audio shows. Too bad they spend so much time bragging about top-end Nikon and Canon DSLRs that most of us can only dream about&#8230;<\/del> The episodes started getting a little too long, Frederick Van Johnson seemed to always ask the same question of all the guests, and I tuned out&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/twit.tv\/TWIT\">This Week In Tech<\/a><\/del>. Started out as a great review of the week&#8217;s news. Then got too big for it&#8217;s boots &#8211; too much &#8220;personality&#8221; and not enough news. Culled from my iTunes after 3 years of listening&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><del><a href=\"http:\/\/gruntmedia.com\/\">Videogrunt<\/a><\/del>. Could have been so good but suddenly stopped broadcasting after just 5 episodes of (very high quality) content.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/twit.tv\/WW\">Windows Weekly<\/a>. Microsoft-focused Podcast with Paul Thurrott and Leo Laporte. Slightly too consumer-focused for my liking but that&#8217;s the way it is. Luckily they stopped doing phone-in episodes but I fear they may well start again now that the TWiT network is going &#8220;live&#8221;.<\/del> This was the last of the TWiT podcasts to drop out of my list, but I couldn&#8217;t stand any more of Leo.<\/li>\n<li><del datetime=\"2011-04-05T14:47:54+00:00\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio\/podcasts\/yyenv\/\">You and Yours Environment<\/a>.
