{"id":1300,"date":"2008-12-22T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2008-12-22T09:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/12\/managing-stored-credentials-from-the-windows-command-prompt-using-cmdkey.htm"},"modified":"2008-12-22T09:00:40","modified_gmt":"2008-12-22T09:00:40","slug":"managing-stored-credentials-from-the-windows-command-prompt-using-cmdkey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/12\/managing-stored-credentials-from-the-windows-command-prompt-using-cmdkey.htm","title":{"rendered":"Managing stored credentials from the Windows command prompt using cmdkey"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been meaning to blog about a command which is a reasonably recent addition to Windows for a few weeks now &#8211; <code>cmdkey.exe<\/code> (thanks to John Craddock for highlighting this at a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xtseminars.co.uk\/\">XTSeminars<\/a> event).<\/p>\n<p>Basically <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/library\/cc754243.aspx\">Microsoft&#8217;s cmdkey<\/a>, introduced with Windows Server 2003 (and which should not be confused with<a href=\"http:\/\/www.geocities.com\/jadoxa\/cmdkey\/index.html\"> Jason Hood&#8217;s companion for <code>cmd.exe<\/code><\/a>), is used to create, list and delete stored security credentials.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/11\/access-denied-when-echoing-files-using-synctoy.htm\">I back up the notebook PC that I use for work to my Netgear ReadyNAS using SyncToy<\/a>.  My ReadyNAS does not support Active Directory but it does provide SMB\/CIFS access.  This means that I can authenticate directly against a share but the username and password do not match the cached domain credentials on the notebook PC.<\/p>\n<p>Supplying credentials each time I need to connect (or forgetting to before attempting a sync) is inconvenient, so I used <code>cmdkey<\/code> to store the username and password that I use to connect to the share:<\/p>\n<p>cmdkey \/add:<em>computername<\/em> \/user:<em>username<\/em> \/pass:<em>password<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In this case <code>cmdkey<\/code> responded as follows:<\/p>\n<p><em>CMDKEY: Credential added successfully.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Typing:<\/p>\n<p><code>cmdkey \/list<\/code><\/p>\n<p>returns:<\/p>\n<p><em>Currently stored credentials:<\/p>\n<p>    Target: <\/em>computername<em><br \/>\n    Type: Domain Password<br \/>\n    User: <\/em>username<\/p>\n<p>and I can connect to a share without supplying any credentials:<\/p>\n<p><code>net use h: \\\\<em>computername<\/em>\\<em>sharename<\/em><\/code><\/p>\n<p><em>The command completed successfully.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore this drive mapping (and stored credentials) persists on reboot &#8211; when the computer is restarted, H: is visible as a disconnected drive in Windows Explorer but as soon as I double-click it I connect without a prompt to supply credentials.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been meaning to blog about a command which is a reasonably recent addition to Windows for a few weeks now &#8211; cmdkey.exe (thanks to John Craddock for highlighting this at a recent XTSeminars event).
