{"id":1311,"date":"2008-12-10T09:00:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-10T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/12\/lenovos-ideapad-s10e-is-exactly-what-id-hoped-for.htm"},"modified":"2011-01-11T10:49:31","modified_gmt":"2011-01-11T10:49:31","slug":"lenovos-ideapad-s10e-is-exactly-what-id-hoped-for","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/12\/lenovos-ideapad-s10e-is-exactly-what-id-hoped-for.htm","title":{"rendered":"Lenovo&#8217;s IdeaPad S10e is exactly what I&#8217;d hoped for"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If this blog post is full of typos it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s because I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m conducting an experiment.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m trying to see if I can type an entire post on an 85% keyboard without making an unacceptable number of mistakes\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 and then I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll tell you if the keyboard on my Lenovo S10e is any good.<\/p>\n<p>Readers may recall that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/12\/why-lenovos-s10-seemed-like-a-good-ideapad-to-me.htm\">just over a week ago, I was very excited at the prospect of the imminent arrival opf my new toy \u00e2\u20ac\u201c my Christmas present to myself<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Some of you even indicated that you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d like to know how I get on with my new netbook and, I have to say, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m pretty impressed.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s get one thing straight \u00e2\u20ac\u201c a 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU is not going yto blowe you away with blinding performance \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but then consider something else (wehich my friend and colleague Dave Saxon pointed out) \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this machine is not designed for content creation and is really intended for content consumption.\u00c2\u00a0 Eben so, I reckon it will be the machine that I use for knocking out most of my blog posts for a while.<\/p>\n<p>OK.\u00c2\u00a0 Keyboard experiment over\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 I will correct any typos from now on but, bearing in mind I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m a 16-and-a-half-stone (230lb\/105kg) guy who stopped growing before he got to 6 foot tall (i.e. a fat bloke) with podgy fingers, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m quite happy that I managed to type three paragraphs with only five mistakes (I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d probably have made a couple on a full-sized keyboard).\u00c2\u00a0 Like I said, this machine is not designed for content creation but as a half-way-house between a fully mobile (PDA\/smartphone) device and a standard notebook PC.\u00c2\u00a0 Comparing the keyboard on my Lenovo S10e with some of the other 10\u00e2\u20ac\u009d netbooks the <code>1<\/code> is a little too far to the left (so I keep hitting <code>2<\/code>) and some others manage a full row of 12 function keys (the Lenovo only has 11 \u00e2\u20ac\u201c requiring a <code>Fn<\/code>+<code>F11<\/code> combination to get <code>F12<\/code>).\u00c2\u00a0 Based on looks alone, the Samsung NC10 seems to have a better keyboard \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a pity it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s such an ugly machine.<\/p>\n<p>Which nicely leads me into the topics of aesthetics and build quality.\u00c2\u00a0 Apple PCs are often held up as examples of design excellence and, when asked about the increasing number of netbooks sold, Apple CEO Steve Jobs is quoted as having said:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/136310\/2008\/10\/netbook.html\"><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know how to produce a $500 computer that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not a piece of junk\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<p class=\"citation\">[<a href=\"http:\/\/www.macworld.com\/article\/136310\/2008\/10\/netbook.html\">Steve Jobs, October 2008<\/a>]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s probably right \u00e2\u20ac\u201c after all, my Apple MacBook is not as well built as I would like and it cost me around \u00c2\u00a3800 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/04\/so-much-for-apples-legendary-build-quality.htm\">it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not quite a $1000 piece of crap \u00e2\u20ac\u201c but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s certainly not as good as it should be<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 So, if Apple can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t even get a premium-priced notebook PC right, they have no chance with anything at this end of the market.\u00c2\u00a0 On the other hand, Lenovo have managed to build a good looking little PC for around the $500 mark (mine cost \u00c2\u00a3292.25, including 15% sales tax) and before I got my hands on it I said that I hoped Lenovo had continued the build quality that previous IBM ThinkPads displayed \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m pleased to say that the S10e does not disappoint. The one criticism that I have is that the back of the screen appears to be constructed from a single, thin sheet and it does flex if pushed.<\/p>\n<p>The one thing that lets the S10e down is battery life.\u00c2\u00a0 In fairness I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t run a full charge cycle on my battery yet (so it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not fully conditioned) but Windows\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 prediction of 4 hours and 13 minutes from a fully-charged battery is wildly optimistic &#8211; I reckon I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll be lucky to get three although I am using the WiFi connection.\u00c2\u00a0 If this becomes a problem then <a href=\"http:\/\/www-01.ibm.com\/common\/ssi\/cgi-bin\/ssialias?infotype=AN&amp;subtype=CA&amp;htmlfid=877\/ENUSZG08-0821&amp;appname=lenovoeurope&amp;language=en\">a 6-cell battery is available<\/a> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I haven\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t found a UK price yet but <a href=\"http:\/\/global-laptop-batteries.com\/ibm-laptop-battery\/6-cell-lenovo-s10-battery.html\">at least one site is selling them for less than $80<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some people have criticised the Lenovo for running hot \u00e2\u20ac\u201c mine\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been charging on the desk for the last few hours and admittedly it is a bit warm but nothing compared to my Fujitsu-Siemens Lifebook S7210, which is quite an effective electric fan heater, or my Apple MacBook, which regularly reports internal temperatures of 70-80 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>My S10e was supplied with 1GB of RAM (512MB fixed and another 512MB of DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM).\u00c2\u00a0 For the type of work that this machine is designed for, that should be plenty and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve not seen any evidence of excessive paging with a few Internet Explorer tabs, a couple of command prompts, a few Explorer windows and Windows Live Writer running.\u00c2\u00a0 Running some Office applications might start to push the envelope slightly though. I can\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t comment on how well it works with Windows 7 (I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll write more as soon as I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m freed from NDA restrictions but Paul Thurrott has reported that there will be a public beta next month so hopefully it won\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be too long), in the meantime I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll just quote <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13924_3-10092075-64.html\">CNet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Brooke Crothers, who wrote<\/a> that:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/8301-13924_3-10092075-64.html\"><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153[Microsoft said that] Windows 7 will run on 1GB of memory and 16GB of (solid-state drive) storage. Higher-end Netbooks will have a 160GB hard disk drive, according to Microsoft \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcguidance.\u00e2\u20ac\u2122\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And who am I to argue with CNet?<\/p>\n<p>Even if 1GB is not enough to run 7 on this hardware, there are reports that a 2GB SODIMM can be installed to take the total to 2.5GB (of which 2GB will be addressable).\u00c2\u00a0 In addition, for those who are running Windows Vista or later, a USB flash drive or SD card can be used with ReadyBoost to improve system responsiveness.<\/p>\n<p>On the expandability front, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a bit of a shame that the SD slot leaves the card sticking out (especially as I have a card in there all the time for ReadyBoost) and it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the same with the PC Express Card slot but these are still valuable capabilities (most netbooks have media cards readers but few offer a PC Express Card slot).<\/p>\n<p>So, onto the million dollar question \u00e2\u20ac\u201c is a netbook actually of any practical use or is it too big a compromise?\u00c2\u00a0 To answer that, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll refer to my previous point \u00e2\u20ac\u201c this device is for content consumption not content creation \u00e2\u20ac\u201c and for web browsing, streaming a bit of TV from the BBC website, catching up on e-mail, RSS feeds, etc., a netbook is fine.\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/11\/29\/three-reasons-why-netbooks-just-arent-good-enough\/\">TechCrunch\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Michael Arrington wrote that there are three reasons why netbooks are not good enough<\/a> and I cannot agree at all.\u00c2\u00a0 Arrington contests that:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.techcrunch.com\/2008\/11\/29\/three-reasons-why-netbooks-just-arent-good-enough\/\"><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re underpowered as PCs, the screen is too small for web surfing, and the keyboard is so small that effective typing is impossible.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Underpowered?\u00c2\u00a0 Well, you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not going to be doing media compression on one of these but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s more than adequate for the purposes I described above.<\/p>\n<p>Screen too small for web surfing? 1024&#215;576 <em>is<\/em> a little shallow but it works on most sites \u00e2\u20ac\u201c there\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the odd dialog box that causes an issue (poor UI design) but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s easy enough to adjust the font size to read a bit more on a web page (<code>Ctrl<\/code>+<code>-<\/code>)and, as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.liliputing.com\/2008\/11\/6-reasons-michael-arringtons-critique-of-netbooks-is-wrong.html\">Liliputing wrote in their response<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.liliputing.com\/2008\/11\/6-reasons-michael-arringtons-critique-of-netbooks-is-wrong.html\"><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153[Arrington] points out that you can only read the first 8 lines of an article on his web site when using a netbook, while you can see the first 22 lines using the iPhone web browser. But you know what? The iPhone doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have a higher resolution display than a netbook, it just has a different web browser. This is a software issue, not a hardware issue\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>(I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d also add that TechCrunch takes up a huge amount of space above the fold with ads and navigation\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6)<\/p>\n<p>As for the keyboard?\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve already proved that, whilst it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not ideal, it is usable \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it may not be great for writing huge documents or knocking out code but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s fine for leaving the odd comment on a website or responding to e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst slightly larger alternatives such as the Dell Mini 12 offer a much better specification (closer to a notebook than to a netbook), the whole point of this purchase (for me) was a small, lightweight package \u00e2\u20ac\u201c so a 10\u00e2\u20ac\u009d model was about my limit.\u00c2\u00a0 Sure, there are some compromises (like the keyboard and the 576px display depth) but this netbook is everything I wanted it to be.\u00c2\u00a0 For less than \u00c2\u00a3300, the Lenovo S10e is fantastic value \u00e2\u20ac\u201c better built than the Acer\/Asus netbooks, more fully-featured than the Dell Mini 9, and better looking than the Samsung NC10.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m pleased to say that I have absolutely no regrets about this particular purchase.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, check out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.s10lenovo.com\/\">Lenovo IdeaPad S Series Forums<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If this blog post is full of typos it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s because I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m conducting an experiment.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m trying to see if I can type an entire post on an 85% keyboard without making an unacceptable number of mistakes\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 and then I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll tell you if the keyboard on my Lenovo S10e is any good.
