{"id":1511,"date":"2009-08-25T01:40:01","date_gmt":"2009-08-25T01:40:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2009\/08\/basic-math-lesson-for-american-software-companies.htm"},"modified":"2009-08-26T16:27:03","modified_gmt":"2009-08-26T16:27:03","slug":"basic-math-lesson-for-american-software-companies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2009\/08\/basic-math-lesson-for-american-software-companies.htm","title":{"rendered":"Basic math lesson for American software companies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Adobe, Apple, Microsoft, et. al. please take note that the US Dollar price for your product multiplied at the current exchange rate, plus 15% value added tax (UK sales tax at today&#8217;s rate) is a lot less than the price you charge us for your software.<\/p>\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/pr\/library\/2009\/08\/24macosx.html\">The Apple Snow Leopard 10.6 update announced today<\/a> is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xe.com\/ucc\/convert.cgi?Amount=29&#038;From=USD&#038;To=GBP&#038;x=41&#038;y=12\">$29 in the US or \u00c2\u00a317.67 at the current exchange rate<\/a>, plus 15% VAT bringing it to just over \u00c2\u00a320.  But Apple thinks the UK consumer can stump up an extra 20% and pay \u00c2\u00a325.  It may only be a fiver but the same principle applies across the entire product range.<\/li>\n<li>Microsoft&#8217;s Windows 7 Ultimate Edition Upgrade (<a href=\"http:\/\/windowsteamblog.com\/blogs\/windows7\/archive\/2009\/08\/24\/update-on-windows-7-in-europe.aspx\">there will now be an upgrade version of Windows 7 in Europe<\/a>) costs $219 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.xe.com\/ucc\/convert.cgi?Amount=219&#038;From=USD&#038;To=GBP&#038;x=41&#038;y=12\">which works out at \u00c2\u00a3133.48<\/a>).  Add the sales tax and we&#8217;re up to just over \u00c2\u00a3150 but Microsoft wants UK customers to pay \u00c2\u00a3199!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A 20-25% uplift is pretty bad (and the VAT will be back to at least 17.5% at the end of January 2010) but Apple and Microsoft are clearly not pushing this as far as they can&#8230; let&#8217;s look at what Adobe charges:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adobe Photoshop CS4 is $699 in the States (which is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xe.com\/ucc\/convert.cgi?Amount=615&#038;From=USD&#038;To=GBP&#038;x=41&#038;y=12\">\u00c2\u00a3373.03<\/a>, or \u00c2\u00a3428.98 if we include the VAT) but, get this, Adobe charges us \u00c2\u00a3615.25 &#8211; that&#8217;s almost a 45% premium&#8230; it&#8217;s a good job they&#8217;re offering free shipping at the moment if I spend more than \u00c2\u00a3350.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Just to be clear, I didn&#8217;t deliberately pick the most expensive products to make software vendors look bad.  These are the latest operating system releases from Apple\/Microsoft and probably Adobe&#8217;s best-known product.
