{"id":1647,"date":"2010-02-18T14:40:37","date_gmt":"2010-02-18T14:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1647"},"modified":"2016-12-31T16:17:27","modified_gmt":"2016-12-31T16:17:27","slug":"reading-exif-data-to-find-out-the-number-of-shutter-activations-on-a-nikon-dslr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/02\/reading-exif-data-to-find-out-the-number-of-shutter-activations-on-a-nikon-dslr.htm","title":{"rendered":"Reading EXIF data to find out the number of shutter activations on a Nikon DSLR"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few years ago, I wrote about some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/08\/useful-utilities-for-digital-photography-using-a-mac.htm\">digital photography utilities<\/a> that I use on my Mac.\u00a0 These days most of my post-processing is handled by Adobe Lightroom (which includes Adobe Camera Raw), with a bit of Photoshop CS4 (using plugins like Noise Ninja) for the high-end stuff but these tools still come in useful from time to time.\u00a0 Unfortunately, Simple EXIF Viewer doesn&#8217;t work with Nikon raw images (.NEF files) and so it&#8217;s less useful to me than it once was.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, I bought my wife a DSLR and, as I&#8217;m a Nikon user (I have a D700), it made sense that her body should fit my lenses so <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/markwilsonit\/status\/8809593685\">I picked up a Nikon refurbished D40 kit\u00a0from London Camera Exchange<\/a>.\u00a0 Whilst the body looked new, I wanted to know how many times the shutter had been activated (<a href=\"http:\/\/d40xd60.wikidot.com\/shutter-life\">DSLR shutter mechanisms have a limited life<\/a> &#8211; about 50,000 for the D40) and the D40&#8217;s firmware won&#8217;t display this information &#8211; although it is captured in the EXIF data for each image.<\/p>\n<p>After some googling, I found a link to Phil Harvey&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sno.phy.queensu.ca\/~phil\/exiftool\/\">ExifTool<\/a>, a platform independent library with a command line interface for accessing EXIF data in a variety of image formats. A few seconds later and I had run the <code>exiftool -nikon dsc_0001.nef<\/code> command (<code>exiftool --?<\/code> gives help) on a test image and it told me a perfectly respectable shutter count of 67.\u00a0 For reference, I tried a similar command on some images from my late Father&#8217;s Canon EOS 1000D\u00a0but shutter count was not one of the available metrics &#8211;
