{"id":1719,"date":"2010-03-23T09:00:54","date_gmt":"2010-03-23T09:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1719"},"modified":"2010-03-22T23:09:37","modified_gmt":"2010-03-22T23:09:37","slug":"windows-support-lifecycle-reminders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/03\/windows-support-lifecycle-reminders.htm","title":{"rendered":"Windows support lifecycle reminders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/03\/first-service-pack-for-windows-7-and-windows-server-2008-r2.htm\">the forthcoming service pack for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 At the other end of its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/03\/three-phases-of-microsoft-support.htm\">support lifecycle<\/a>, is <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/lifecycle\/archive\/2010\/02\/24\/end-of-support-for-windows-2000-and-extended-support-phase-transition-for-windows-server-2003.aspx\">Windows 2000, which finally reaches end of life (i.e. the end of extended support) on 13 July 2010<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Windows XP remains on extended support for a while longer (<a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/lifecycle\/?p1=3223\">until 8 April 2014<\/a>) but <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/lifecycle\/archive\/2010\/02\/24\/end-of-support-for-windows-xp-sp2-and-windows-vista-with-no-service-packs-installed.aspx\">service pack 2 (SP2) also goes out of support on 13 July 2010<\/a> and, from that date onwards, Microsoft will no longer support or provide free security updates for Windows XP systems running\u00c2\u00a0SP2 or earlier.\u00c2\u00a0 Service pack 3 is available free of charge; however Windows XP users should really be planning on migration to a later version of Windows.\u00c2\u00a0 For details of how to obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP, see <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/322389\">Microsoft knowledge base article 322389<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/lifecycle\/archive\/2010\/02\/24\/end-of-support-for-windows-2000-and-extended-support-phase-transition-for-windows-server-2003.aspx\">on 13 July, Windows Server 2003 moves out of mainstream support and into its extended support phase<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 Service pack 1 for Windows Server 2003 was retired on 14 April 2009, so service pack 2 is required in order to remain supported.\u00c2\u00a0 For details of how to obtain the latest service pack for Windows Server 2003 (and Windows Server 2003 R2), see <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/889100\">Microsoft knowledge base article 889100<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2003 R2 are subject to the same support lifecycle milestones as each other.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/lifecycle\/archive\/2010\/02\/24\/end-of-support-for-windows-xp-sp2-and-windows-vista-with-no-service-packs-installed.aspx\">Windows Vista with no Service Packs installed will also lose support on 13 April 2010<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 Customers are advised to install service pack 2 for Windows Vista in order to remain secure and supported (although <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/lifecycle\/?p1=12534\">service pack 1 is still supported until 12 July 2011<\/a>).\u00c2\u00a0 For details of how to obtain the latest service pack for Windows Vista, see <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/935791\">Microsoft knowledge base article 935791<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Customers running Windows Server 2008 have plenty of time left in their operating system investment, although <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/889100\">Windows Server 2008 service pack 1 will be retired on 12 July 2011<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 For details of how to obtain the latest service pack for Windows Server 2008, see <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/kb\/968849\">Microsoft knowledge base article 968849<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 The same service pack is applicable to both Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I wrote about the forthcoming service pack for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.\u00c2\u00a0 At the other end of its support lifecycle, is Windows 2000, which finally reaches end of life (i.e. the end of extended support) on 13 July 2010.
