I tried adjusting the properties on folders but the actual disk was showing as write protected &#8211; very strange.<\/p>\n<p>I still don&#8217;t know why this occurred but this was the disk that I use to keep personal items separate from work on my company-supplied notebook, which runs BeCrypt DiskProtect &#8211; and I suspect DiskProtect may be part of the issue.  Nevertheless, I did find an apparant solution, courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sevenforums.com\/hardware-devices\/7721-any-hard-drive-write-protected.html\">a post at Windows Seven Forums<\/a> that refers to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.t3chworks.com\/index.php?p=2_1\">a post on the T3chworks site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alternate\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/diskpart-clear-readonly.png?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Using diskpart.exe to clear read-only attributes from a volume\" \/>By running <code>diskpart.exe<\/code> from an elevated command prompt (<code>cmd.exe<\/code>), I was able to issue a few commands to remove the readonly attribute on the media and write files to it again:<\/p>\n<p><code>list volume<br \/>\nselect volume <em>volumenumber<\/em><br \/>\nattributes disk clear readonly<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Only time will tell if this is a permanent fix (the post also talks of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irongeek.com\/i.php?page=security\/thumbscrew-software-usb-write-blocker\">modifying a registry entry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\System\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\StorageDevicePolicies\\WriteProtect<\/a> but that&#8217;s not present on my system) but I&#8217;ve never seen this before, and it seems to have done the trick for the time being.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Years ago, when floppy discs were the norm, I was used to having to flip the write protect switch (or cover over the notch on older discs) but I was a little surprised today when I couldn&#8217;t write to my USB removable hard drive because Windows 7 told me that the media was write protected. &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/09\/clearing-the-readonly-attribute-on-write-protected-media-in-windows.htm\" class=\"more-link\">Continue reading <span class=\"screen-reader-text\">Clearing the readonly attribute on write protected media in Windows<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[],"tags":[144],"class_list":["post-2033","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","tag-windows-7"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
