{"id":2355,"date":"2011-02-17T16:05:38","date_gmt":"2011-02-17T16:05:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2355"},"modified":"2011-02-17T16:05:38","modified_gmt":"2011-02-17T16:05:38","slug":"exporting-sharepoint-calendar-details-in-icalendar-format","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2011\/02\/exporting-sharepoint-calendar-details-in-icalendar-format.htm","title":{"rendered":"Exporting SharePoint Calendar details in iCalendar format"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my current activities involves sharing the contents of a SharePoint calendar, which is hosted on an Intranet site, with external contacts.\u00c2\u00a0 An extranet portal would be one possible approach but it&#8217;s probably over-engineering the solution and a simple calendar export, updated on a regular basis would also suit the requirement.<\/p>\n<p>SharePoint allows RSS export from a Calendar but the events are exported in the order in which they were added to the calendar, rather than in chronolical order.\u00c2\u00a0 I thought it would be far more useful to export them in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ICalendar\">iCalendar<\/a> format and it turns out that&#8217;s possible too &#8211; with the addition of\u00c2\u00a0 an open source webpart called <a href=\"http:\/\/cks.codeplex.com\/releases\/view\/4234\">iCal Exporter<\/a> (which my colleague Andrew Richardson tracked down).\u00c2\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/sharepoint.microsoft.com\/blog\/Pages\/BlogPost.aspx?PageType=4&amp;ListId=%7b72C1C85B-1D2D-4A4A-90DE-CA74A7808184%7d&amp;pID=761\">You can also interrogate the SharePoint object model directly<\/a> but that&#8217;s beyond my limited coding abilities.<\/p>\n<p>Installing the webpart is pretty straightforward:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Unzip the compiled version of the iCal Exporter webpart and copy the <code>iCalExporter.wsp<\/code> file to the hard drive on a SharePoint server (I used Windows SharePoint Services 3.0).<\/li>\n<li>From the command prompt, issue the following commands to navigate to the folder containing <code>stsadm.exe<\/code>, install the solution and deploy the solution:<br \/>\n<code>cd \u00e2\u20ac\u0153%commonprogramfiles%\\Microsoft Shared\\Web Server Extensions\\12\\bin\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nstsadm \u00e2\u20ac\u201co addsolution \u00e2\u20ac\u201cfilename \u00e2\u20ac\u0153c:\\iCalExporter.wsp\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<br \/>\nstsadm \u00e2\u20ac\u201co deploysolution \u00e2\u20ac\u201cname iCalExporter.wsp \u00e2\u20ac\u201clocal<\/code> (it may be necessary to specify other options if deploying in a multi-server environments.)<\/li>\n<li>Using a web browser, navigate to the server\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s site collection features page and click the Activate button on the iCalendar export button feature.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once installed, there is an additional option on the Actions menu export the calendar in iCalendar format.\u00c2\u00a0 Give the resulting file an <code>.ics<\/code> extension and distribute it at will &#8211; most calendar clients (I tested in Outlook but it should work for others too) will be able to view the appointment details.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of my current activities involves sharing the contents of a SharePoint calendar, which is hosted on an Intranet site, with external contacts.\u00c2\u00a0 An extranet portal would be one possible approach but it&#8217;s probably over-engineering the solution and a simple calendar export, updated on a regular basis would also suit the requirement.
