{"id":243,"date":"2006-02-08T22:08:00","date_gmt":"2006-02-08T22:08:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2006\/02\/tips-for-managing-digital-audio.htm"},"modified":"2008-12-31T16:27:39","modified_gmt":"2008-12-31T16:27:39","slug":"tips-for-managing-digital-audio","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/02\/tips-for-managing-digital-audio.htm","title":{"rendered":"Tips for managing digital audio"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--113943868421542274--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectedhomemag.com\/audio\/articles\/index.cfm?articleid=49339\">Paul Thurrott has just posted a useful article on the Connected Home Media site about <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.connectedhomemag.com\/audio\/articles\/index.cfm?articleid=49339\">acquiring digital media<\/a> (the comments are worth a read too).<\/p>\n<p>I use <a href=\"http:\/\/clkuk.tradedoubler.com\/click?p(23708)a(1115261)g(11703474)\">iTunes<\/a> (only because I have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/05\/finally-joining-ipod-generation.htm\">iPod<\/a> &#8211; otherwise it would be far more convenient for me to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/windows\/windowsmedia\/\">Windows Media Player<\/a>) and have ripped all of my <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/CD\">CDs<\/a> to disk as 192-bit MP3s (I still need to rip the CD singles, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vinyl_record\">vinyl records<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Compact_audio_cassette\">compact cassettes<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minidisc\">MiniDiscs<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DVD\">DVDs<\/a>), but I do disagree with Paul on one point- I still buy music on CD.  I do this for a number of reasons:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I own a legal copy of the music without any digital rights management (DRM).<\/li>\n<li>I have a backup copy.<\/li>\n<li>If I buy my CDs online (or from the supermarket), it generally costs the same (or less) as buying a whole album from iTunes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having said that, I did buy a couple of tracks from iTunes recently &#8211; single tracks when I didn&#8217;t want to pay an extortionate price for a CD single.  I was concerned about DRM and the limitations of 128-bit AAC but using the iTunes Music Store is really easy.<\/p>\n<p>Paul&#8217;s approach of burning the legal downloads to CD and then ripping them again is a great idea (accepting that there will be an inevitable loss in quality) &#8211; at least that way I have a non-DRM copy for use in years to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul Thurrott has just posted a useful article on the Connected Home Media site about acquiring digital media (the comments are worth a read too).
