In the old site they had been implemented as bespoke code using each social network&#8217;s recommended approach (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/08\/adding-a-tweet-button-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-blog.htm\">Twitter<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/09\/adding-a-facebook-share-or-like-button-to-a-self-hosted-wordpress-blog.htm\">Facebook<\/a>&#8216;s official button codes) but presentation becomes problematic, with each button having a slightly different format and needing some CSS trickery to get it right.<\/p>\n<p>I looked into a variety of plugins but they all had issues &#8211; either with formatting or functionality &#8211; until I stumbled across reference to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.support.wordpress.com\/sharing\/\">WordPress.com&#8217;s social sharing capabilities<\/a>. \u00a0If only I could have that functionality on a self-hosted (WordPress.org) site&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;As it happens, I can &#8211; WordPress.com&#8217;s social sharing is based on the ShareDaddy plugin, which is part of a collection called <a href=\"http:\/\/jetpack.me\/\">JetPack<\/a>. ShareDaddy is also available as a freestanding plugin but now I have JetPack installed I&#8217;m finding some of the other functionality it gives me useful (and it&#8217;s not possible to activate ShareDaddy if you have JetPack installed).<\/p>\n<p>I need to make some changes (like working out how to hack the code and turn off the count next to my Tweet\/Like\/+1 buttons &#8211; it&#8217;s embarrassing when the number is small!) but I&#8217;m happy enough with the result for now. \u00a0One thing I did need to do though was to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.support.wordpress.com\/sharing\/#adding-your-own-service\">add some services<\/a>\u00a0that are not yet in the JetPack version of the plugin (one of the major advantages of ShareDaddy is how simple it is to do this).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The first service I added was Google +1, for which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.diturner.co.uk\/lab\/frp-google-1-for-jetpack-sharedaddy\/\">Di Turner has produced a plugin to extend ShareDaddy<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The other important one for me is LinkedIn (<a href=\"http:\/\/wpverse.com\/2011\/06\/sharedaddy-adds-linkedin\/\">it&#8217;s in ShareDaddy but not yet in the JetPack version<\/a>).\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ryanmarkel.com\/2010\/08\/26\/adding-a-custom-sharing-service-to-wordpress-com\/\">Ryan Markel has created a post to describe the process for adding custom sharing services<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/paulrobertlloyd.com\/2009\/06\/social_media_icons\/\">Paul Robert Lloyd&#8217;s social media icons<\/a> are useful for this) and he&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/ryanmarkel.com\/2010\/08\/31\/adding-specific-sharing-services-to-sharedaddy-or-jetpack\/\">listed the settings for some services<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/wordpresssites.net\/best-plugins\/how-to-add-new-sharing-service-urls-to-jetpacks-social-sharedaddy-plugin\/\">Brad Dalton has listed some more<\/a>, including LinkedIn (the one I needed).<\/li>\n<li>Finally, I found <a href=\"http:\/\/en.forums.wordpress.com\/topic\/sharing-button-for-linkedin-and-print-button?replies=4#post-514394\">a forum post from airodyssey with details of an improved Print option<\/a>, using the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.printfriendly.com\/\">PrintFriendly<\/a> service.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night, as part of the rebuild of this site, I reinstated the social sharing links for each post.
