{"id":285,"date":"2006-05-23T16:40:00","date_gmt":"2006-05-23T16:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2006\/05\/how-not-to-image-servers.htm"},"modified":"2007-05-15T09:32:49","modified_gmt":"2007-05-15T08:32:49","slug":"how-not-to-image-servers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/05\/how-not-to-image-servers.htm","title":{"rendered":"How not to image servers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--114841809373947273-->A couple of weeks back, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/05\/duplicating-virtual-machines-using.htm\">using Microsoft&#8217;s system preparation tool (SysPrep) to prepare virtual machine images for duplication<\/a>.  It doesn&#8217;t really matter whether the machine is virtual or physical, the principle is still the same (my point was that cloning virtual machines using a file copy is easy but needs to be prepared in a specific way &#8211; i.e. using SysPrep).<\/p>\n<p>A few days ago I was completely amazed to hear how one of my clients had duplicated some of their servers &#8211; they had simply broken a mirror, placed the second disk in a new server, then added another disk in each server to recreate the mirror (repeat until all servers are successfully duplicated).  It may be ingenious, but it&#8217;s also extremely bad practice.<\/p>\n<p>The client in question is in the process of preparing for a migration from Windows NT to Windows Server 2003 and Active Directory.  Although NT doesn&#8217;t get too upset if servers are cloned, including their security identifier (SID), Active Directory does.  They now have three choices:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rebuild the problem servers.<\/li>\n<li>Remove the servers from the domain.<\/li>\n<li>Use a tool like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sysinternals.com\/utilities\/newsid.html\">Sysinternals NewSID<\/a> to change the SIDs (both officially unsupported by Microsoft).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whatever the decision, it&#8217;s all extra (and unnecessary) work &#8211; completely avoidable.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A couple of weeks back, I wrote about using Microsoft&#8217;s system preparation tool (SysPrep) to prepare virtual machine images for duplication.
