That&#8217;s quite some achievement. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2010\/12\/microsofts-kinect-is-awesome.htm\">I described how Kinect works in an earlier post<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(3 cameras including\u00c2\u00a0one RGB and two 3D motion depth sensors, 4 microphones for directional audio) but Andrew highlighted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/audreypenven\/sets\/72157625454305998\/\">Audrey Penven&#8217;s photographs demonstrating the infra-red light patterns that Kinect uses<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc-sa\/2.0\/\">Audrey&#8217;s image is shown here under a creative commons licence<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>After some initial unauthorised hacking, <a href=\"http:\/\/research.microsoft.com\/en-us\/um\/redmond\/projects\/kinectsdk\/\">Microsoft has now released an official software development kit for Kinect<\/a>, allowing Windows developers to develop new uses for the sensor [although there isn&#8217;t yet a commercial model for it&#8217;s use as a PC peripheral]. Andrew demonstrated some simple skeletal tracking but some of the examples of Kinect hacks (pre-SDK) include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5694204\">Digital &#8220;shadow&#8221; puppetry<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/kotaku.com\/5700284\/kinect-hacked-to-play-super-mario-bros\">Playing Super Mario Bros<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/kinect.dashhacks.com\/kinect-tetris\">Tetris 3D<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2010\/11\/22\/kinect-lightsaber-and-other-inevitable-milestones-for-the-open\/\">Kinect light sabre<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kinectaku.com\/news\/2010\/12\/new_kinect_hack_lets_you_become_invisible\">The invisible man<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Kinect Flight Simulator mashup with Bing Maps (&#8220;Flight Kin troller&#8221;).<\/li>\n<li>Remote control of a robot (there are several examples of this &#8211; and the possibilities are staggering).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2010\/12\/06\/kinect-used-as-a-quadrocopter-radar-video\/\">Quadrocopter RADAR<\/a> [gotta have one of these]<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/kinect.dashhacks.com\/kinect-news\/2011\/06\/02\/kinect-wi-go-project-helps-people-disabilities-accomplish-day-day-activities\">Kinect wi-GO to aid those with diabilities in everyday activities<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chrisoshea.org\/lab\/air-guitar-prototype\">Kinect air guitar<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>[My favourite was when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/thanks_to_kinect_googles_gmail_motion_joke_becomes.php\">Google&#8217;s GMail Motion April Fool was made reality, using Kinect<\/a>].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are some pretty cool projects there &#8211; some are just geeky, but others have real, practical uses. Now that there is an official SDK, Microsoft is suggesting that we&#8217;re only limited by our imagination&#8230; and that&#8217;s probably not to far from the truth!<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/magazine\/archive\/2010\/11\/features\/the-game-changer?page=all\"><p>&#8220;All you need is life experience&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"citation\">[Alex Kipman, &#8220;Kinect brainchild&#8221;]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Andrew finished off his presentation with a video where Kinect becomes self-aware.
