{"id":29,"date":"2004-10-21T08:18:00","date_gmt":"2004-10-21T08:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2004\/10\/introducing-ultra-personal-computer.htm"},"modified":"2007-05-15T12:47:47","modified_gmt":"2007-05-15T11:47:47","slug":"introducing-ultra-personal-computer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2004\/10\/introducing-ultra-personal-computer.htm","title":{"rendered":"Introducing the ultra personal computer (uPC)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--109834931348812737--><a href=\"http:\/\/www.1succeeded0failed0skipped.com\/\">Howard van Rooijen<\/a>&#8216;s reply to my post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2004\/10\/installing-energy-blue-theme-on.htm\">installing the &#8220;Energy Blue&#8221; theme on a computer running Windows XP Professional<\/a> got me looking at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarkezone.net\/\">James Clarke&#8217;s blog<\/a>, where I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarkezone.net\/default.aspx?id=6db3957c-09cb-4adc-b355-4b7742275378\">a post about the OQO Model 01 ultra personal computer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I haven&#8217;t seen a real one yet but this looks like a cool device &#8211; no cut down operating system &#8211; just full Windows XP Professional (not CE) on a 1GHz pocket-sized PC with 256Mb RAM, a 20Gb hard disk and a slide-out keyboard. It can also connect to peripheral devices including video (1280&#215;1024 pixels), audio, Ethernet, FireWire and USB (only 1.1 at this time) using a docking cable. For more details, see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oqo.com\/\">OQO website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Back in February I was at a product demonstration for the Antelope Technologies modular computer (similar to the OQO, but the computer &#8220;core&#8221; is a hard-disk-sized unit which plugs in to a variety of shells for ruggedised, portable computing). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antelopetech.com\/\">More details of the modular computer are available at the Antelope Technologies website<\/a> but the OQO looks more like a business tool, whereas I can see the modular computer taking off for industrial\/commercial use.<\/p>\n<p>The only problem for me right now is the $1999 price tag (plus options)&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Howard van Rooijen&#8216;s reply to my post about installing the &#8220;Energy Blue&#8221; theme on a computer running Windows XP Professional got me looking at James Clarke&#8217;s blog, where I found a post about the OQO Model 01 ultra personal computer.
