{"id":302,"date":"2006-06-30T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2006-06-30T14:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2006\/06\/end-of-microsoft-or-end-of-beginning.htm"},"modified":"2007-03-09T13:33:44","modified_gmt":"2007-03-09T13:33:44","slug":"end-of-microsoft-or-end-of-beginning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/06\/end-of-microsoft-or-end-of-beginning.htm","title":{"rendered":"The end of Microsoft &#8211; or the end of the beginning?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--115168062750486297-->As a sort of self-appointed Microsoft technical evangelist and reasonably prolific blogger, some people might find it odd that I haven&#8217;t yet commented on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/press\/2006\/jun06\/06-15corpnewspr.mspx\">Bill Gates&#8217; decision to stand down as Microsoft&#8217;s top man in 2008<\/a> (actually, he will still be Chairman and adviser) or (less significantly) the decision by <a href=\"http:\/\/scobleizer.wordpress.com\/\">Robert Scoble<\/a> (Scobleizer &#8211; Microsoft technical evangelist and of <a href=\"http:\/\/channel9.msdn.com\/\">Channel 9<\/a> fame) <a href=\"http:\/\/scobleizer.wordpress.com\/2006\/06\/10\/correcting-the-record-about-microsoft\/\">to leave Microsoft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The main reason for not writing about these events is that I was on holiday at the time; but one other reason is that a company is more than one person (or two people). Bill Gates didn&#8217;t start Microsoft alone &#8211; he may have helped to make it successful (in the way that Steve Jobs&#8217; return to Apple is widely reckoned to have been the turning point in that company&#8217;s fortune but there were many thousands of people involved in making things happen) but the world&#8217;s largest software company is not about to implode because one of its founding members wants to retire.<\/p>\n<p>I do think that the Microsoft&#8217;s dominance in the PC and PC server markets may be limited (partly due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2004\/12\/why-eus-sanctions-against-microsoft.htm\">dodgy anti-trust rulings<\/a>) but that&#8217;s got nothing to do with whether or not Bill Gates is in charge and that&#8217;s why I&#8217;ve also made a point of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/03\/quick-introduction-to-linux-for.htm\">learning a bit about Linux<\/a> (oh yes, and I bought a Mac yesterday &#8211; but it&#8217;s okay &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/04\/running-another-operating-system-on.htm\">I&#8217;ll probably run Windows on it<\/a>&#8230; although maybe not exclusively).<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t know much about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/exec\/ozzie\/\">Ray Ozzie<\/a> (the new Microsoft Chief Software Architect) except that he is credited as the creator of Lotus Notes before he set up Groove Networks; however I am pleased to see is that Bill Gates&#8217; replacement is a technology person who understands business &#8211; not a bland bean-counting senior management type (and not another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/presspass\/exec\/steve\/\">Steve Ballmer<\/a> either, whose energetic style I find to be a little too strange at times).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/jamesone\/archive\/2006\/06\/19\/437155.aspx\">James O&#8217;Neill has an interesting blog post on the departure of Gates and Scoble<\/a> &#8211; it may be a bit long (and remember it was written by someone who works at Microsoft) but I think he makes some good points.
