It seems that by popular usage today, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.googlefight.com\/index.php?lang=en_GB&amp;word1=email&#038;word2=e-mail\">email is 10 times more common than e-mail<\/a>.  As IT Week points out, the grammatically correct version (e&#8217;mail) is unlikely to catch on.
