{"id":337,"date":"2005-08-18T21:50:00","date_gmt":"2005-08-18T21:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2005\/08\/rtfm.htm"},"modified":"2007-07-16T19:08:32","modified_gmt":"2007-07-16T18:08:32","slug":"rtfm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/08\/rtfm.htm","title":{"rendered":"RTFM&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--112440186638109879-->I haven&#8217;t really come across Fujitsu PCs and servers since I left ICL in 2000; but now I&#8217;m back on board at Fujitsu Services (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.itweek.co.uk\/2127583\/\">same company &#8211; different name<\/a>), not surprisingly, my new work laptop is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fujitsu-siemens.com\/products\/mobile\/notebooks\/lifebook_s.html\">Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S7010D<\/a>. It seems like a really good notebook PC (although I find the absence of quick launch function keys in order to make room for a PIN-entry security pad a little strange &#8211; I would have preferred <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pc.ibm.com\/europe\/thinkpad\/tour\/fingerprint\/launch.html\">an integrated fingerprint reader like those offered on selected IBM ThinkPads<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>When I brought the laptop home and the onboard wireless LAN card didn&#8217;t detect any of the four wireless networks within range of my home office, I naturally assumed it was broken (based on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2004\/09\/dell-fails-on-service-delivery.htm\">previous experience with a Dell Latitude D600<\/a>); but then I had a similar problem with Bluetooth communications so I did the unthinkable (for any self-respecting IT infrastructure consultant) &#8211; I called the IT helpdesk.<\/p>\n<p>In what must have qualified for my most embarrassing helpdesk call ever, I found out that there is a switch on the front of the PC to enable\/disable the wireless LAN and Bluetooth module. Once enabled, everything sprung into life.
