{"id":348,"date":"2006-08-11T08:45:00","date_gmt":"2006-08-11T08:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2006\/08\/ibm-pc-25-years-old-today.htm"},"modified":"2007-03-09T11:31:18","modified_gmt":"2007-03-09T11:31:18","slug":"ibm-pc-25-years-old-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/08\/ibm-pc-25-years-old-today.htm","title":{"rendered":"The IBM PC &#8211; 25 years old today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--115508112438353633-->After reporting on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/08\/happy-birthday-to-world-wide-web.htm\">the 15th anniversary of the world wide web<\/a> earlier this week, there&#8217;s another important milestone in computing history to highlight today &#8211; the 25th birthday of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_PC\">the original IBM PC<\/a> &#8211; the 5150.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/ibm-pc.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"IBM PC\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whilst the 5150 was not the first personal computer, the use of components that were available to other manufacturers led to the development of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IBM_PC_compatible\">IBM-compatible PCs<\/a> and today&#8217;s PCs and PC servers are direct descendents from the original IBM PC, albeit much more powerful than the 4.77MHz <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpu-world.com\/CPUs\/8088\/\">Intel 8088<\/a> with between 16 and 640KB of RAM.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/amstrad-ppc640.jpg?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Amstrad PPC640\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t get my first IBM-compatible PC until 1988 when my parents bought me an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.old-computers.com\/museum\/computer.asp?c=195&amp;st=1\">Amstrad PPC640<\/a> portable computer (it&#8217;s still in my loft at home) with an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpu-world.com\/CPUs\/V30\/\">NEC V30 8MHz processor<\/a>, 640KB of RAM, a full-size 102-key keyboard, two 720KB 3.5&#8243; floppy disk drives and a 2400 baud modem (which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northamptonshire.gov.uk\/Learning\/Institutions\/schoolsdir.htm?SchoolDetail=9284071%7CSecondary\">my secondary school<\/a> let some of my friends and I use for short periods of time to access bulletin boards). It was best described as &#8220;luggable&#8221; but, paired with the Citizen 120D dot matrix printer (that I also still have at home), it was more than adequate for word processing and saw me through my first year at Uni&#8217; until I used all my childhood savings to buy an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cpu-world.com\/CPUs\/80386\/\">Intel 80386<\/a>-based PC clone with a 1MB graphics card, MS-DOS 5.0, and Windows 3.0.<\/p>\n<p>Fast forward 15 years and you can pick up a PC for just a couple of hundred pounds &#8211; or, if you&#8217;ve got a few thousand to spend then it&#8217;s possible to specify some very high specification PC servers! Earlier this week I was specifying some servers for a virtualisation solution that I&#8217;m working on. Each of these servers is an HP DL585 with 4 dual-core 2.6GHz <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2006\/04\/rise-of-64-bit-windows-server.htm\">AMD Opteron 64-bit CPUs<\/a>, 32GB of RAM and has a fibre-channel connection to an HP Modular Storage Array with many terabytes of data storage.
