{"id":3581,"date":"2012-02-01T12:00:32","date_gmt":"2012-02-01T12:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3581"},"modified":"2012-02-06T13:59:36","modified_gmt":"2012-02-06T13:59:36","slug":"trying-to-tether-the-nokia-lumia-800","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/02\/trying-to-tether-the-nokia-lumia-800.htm","title":{"rendered":"Trying to tether the Nokia Lumia 800"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2011\/12\/making-an-ordinary-3g-data-sim-work-in-an-ipad-without-a-tariff-change.htm\">my company-supplied SIM stopped working in my iPad<\/a> (it&#8217;s not blocked &#8211; it works in a 3G dongle, just not in the iPad&#8230;) I&#8217;ve been looking at other solutions. Before we switched from Vodafone to O2, I had a fantastic Wi-Fi router but the software needs a Vodafone SIM so that&#8217;s not working for me any more. \u00a0Another option is to use my smartphone as a modem: my company-supplied iPhone does not have the personal hotspot functionality enabled (and it&#8217;s not jailbroken either), so that leaves my personal Nokia Lumia 800; except that Internet sharing isn&#8217;t available on that device&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I spent a bit of time yesterday evening looking into this and, even though I was ultimately unsuccessful, I thought I&#8217;d share my research, in case it comes in useful later:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you&#8217;re thinking of using the Lumia 800 as a Bluetooth modem, you&#8217;re out of luck. \u00a0According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.developer.nokia.com\/Devices\/Device_specifications\/Lumia_800\/\">Nokia&#8217;s device specifications<\/a> the supported Bluetooth profiles are\u00a0A2DP 1.2, AVCTP 1.0, AVDTP 1.0, AVRCP 1.0, AVRCP 1.3, GAVDP 1.2, HFP 1.5, HSP 1.1, PBAP 1.0, RFCOMM 1.0, and SPP 1.0. <a href=\"http:\/\/discussions.nokia.co.uk\/t5\/Nokia-with-Windows-Phone\/Lumia-800-Bluetooth-Waht-exactly-is-it-compatible-with\/td-p\/1233651\">It&#8217;s also missing FTP, OPP and GEOP so file\/contact transfers are out<\/a>\u00a0of the question too&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Nokia Lumia 800 driver installation fails on Windows 7\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/nokia-lumia-800-drivers-fail.png?resize=322%2C168&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Nokia Lumia 800 driver installation fails on Windows 7\" width=\"322\" height=\"168\" \/>For a cable-based solution, there is a method of tethering LG and Samsung phones that involves enabling diagnostics mode and switching into serial mode (more information at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ilaptopphone.com\/smartphones\/possible-tethering-on-the-windows-phone-nokia-lumia-800\/\">ilaptopphone.com<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/mywpstory.com\/2010\/12\/how-to-tether-on-your-new-windows-phone-7-as-long-as-its-a-samsung-focus\/\">mywpstory.com<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilitydigest.com\/windows-phone-7-tethers-you-can-do-it-now-heres-how\/\">mobilitydigest.com<\/a>). I used the same method to switch the Lumia into serial mode (requires a reboot and disables Zune sync, until you switch it back again) but Windows was unable to find any drivers.<\/li>\n<li><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Windows Phone connection not shared error\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/wp7-connection-not-shared.png?resize=144%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Windows Phone connection not shared error\" width=\"144\" height=\"240\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Internet Sharing in Windows Phone settings\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/wp7-internet-sharing.png?resize=144%2C240&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet Sharing in Windows Phone settings\" width=\"144\" height=\"240\" \/><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Internet sharing tile on Windows Phone, enabled with Supreme Shortcuts\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/wp7-internet-sharing-tile.png?resize=104%2C104&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Internet sharing tile on Windows Phone, enabled with Supreme Shortcuts\" width=\"104\" height=\"104\" \/>The <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/showthread.php?t=1343993\">Supreme Shortcuts<\/a> app was another route I tried &#8211; it can be used (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2011\/12\/unlocking-my-windows-phone-using-chevron-wp7.htm\">on an unlocked phone<\/a>) to enable an Internet Sharing icon for a Settings option that&#8217;s hidden on the Lumia 800. Sadly, turning it on results in a dialogue that says &#8220;Internet sharing isn&#8217;t currently available&#8221; &#8211; I suspect I might be able to do something in the registry, if only there was an interop unlock available for the Lumia 800, and there isn&#8217;t at the time of writing&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is a glimmer of hope though. Some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2011\/11\/04\/nokia-promises-tethering-for-lumia-800-points-finger-of-blame-a\/\">reports indicate that Nokia will enable tethering in a future update<\/a> (I\u00a0believe\u00a0the Lumia 900 has this feature) but there is no date given yet (just some time in 2012). \u00a0I do hope it comes soon though &#8211; the Lumia 800 is a great handset but it&#8217;s held back by far too many artificial software limitations&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since my company-supplied SIM stopped working in my iPad (it&#8217;s not blocked &#8211; it works in a 3G dongle, just not in the iPad&#8230;) I&#8217;ve been looking at other solutions.
