{"id":3704,"date":"2012-03-10T00:24:15","date_gmt":"2012-03-10T00:24:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3704"},"modified":"2012-03-10T00:28:22","modified_gmt":"2012-03-10T00:28:22","slug":"northern-lights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/03\/northern-lights.htm","title":{"rendered":"Northern Lights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/well_lucio\/1054046071\/\" title=\"aurora by well_lucio, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm2.staticflickr.com\/1088\/1054046071_9a6fc75c9a_m.jpg?resize=240%2C167\" width=\"240\" height=\"167\" alt=\"Aurora\" class=\"alignleft\" \/><\/a>I love the idea of watching the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) and was equally pleased to learn of the existence of Southern Lights (Aurora Australis) which I&#8217;m sure would be just as fascinating to watch in the night sky. \u00a0So far, I&#8217;ve not seen either of these\u00a0phenomena but,\u00a0with the increased levels of solar activity of late, it&#8217;s possible that, with a clear sky, it may be possible to see the Northern Lights, even where I live in Southern England and I was pretty hopeful this evening. \u00a0Sadly the forecast has changed and a display here now looks unlikely.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, whilst I was hunting for advice on how best to see the Northern Lights, I found some really good information about <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aurora_(astronomy)\">the auroras<\/a>\u00a0and it&#8217;s probably worth sharing it here:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First up, I found the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geomag.bgs.ac.uk\/education\/viewing_aurora.html\">British Geological Survey&#8217;s advice on viewing the Northern Lights in the UK<\/a>. There is also a Twitter account (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/BGSauroraAlert\">@BGSAuroraAlert<\/a>) that gives occasional alerts from the British Geological Survey.<\/li>\n<li>The BGS Aurora Alert feed pointed me in the direction of an <a href=\"http:\/\/helios.swpc.noaa.gov\/ovation\/\">Auroral Forecast<\/a>\u00a0which includes maps for various regions including a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/helios.swpc.noaa.gov\/ovation\/Europe.html\">European Aurora Forecast<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, Lancaster University&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk\/\">AuroraWatch UK<\/a> website includes live magnetometer data and \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk\/alerts\">an alerting system<\/a> that can be followed on Twitter (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/aurorawatchuk\">@aurorawatchuk<\/a>), <a href=\"http:\/\/facebook.com\/aurorawatchuk\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk\/cgi-bin\/subscribe\">by email<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Image credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/well_lucio\/1054046071\/\">Aurora<\/a>, by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/well_lucio\/\">well_lucio on Flickr<\/a>.
