{"id":3831,"date":"2012-04-11T23:31:08","date_gmt":"2012-04-11T22:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3831"},"modified":"2012-04-12T09:40:47","modified_gmt":"2012-04-12T08:40:47","slug":"fighting-with-competing-ebook-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/04\/fighting-with-competing-ebook-standards.htm","title":{"rendered":"Fighting with competing eBook standards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last year, I was involved in the production of Fujitsu&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www-s.fujitsu.com\/uk\/contact\/white-book-cloud-security.html\">White Book of Cloud Security<\/a>\u00a0(continuing the series after the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www-s.fujitsu.com\/uk\/contact\/white-book.html\">White Book of Cloud Adoption<\/a>) and earlier today I was sent copies in eBook form. \u00a0I emailed them to my Kindle (app), only to find that Amazon doesn&#8217;t support .EPUB format books. \u00a0Whilst I understand why Amazon might like its own content to appear in a different format, not supporting the .EPUB standard for people to add their own content seems strange (and I&#8217;m not alone in thinking this &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/perlow\/epub-the-final-barrier-for-kindle-adoption\/13804\">Jason Perlow wrote about Amazon&#8217;s lack of support for .EPUB back in 2010<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, it&#8217;s pretty simple to convert between .EPUB and MOBI formats, using freely available software (<a href=\"http:\/\/calibre-ebook.com\/\">Calibre<\/a>) &#8211; as \u00a0highlighted on Twitter by James Williams (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/LoneGunmanUK\">@LoneGunmanUK<\/a>) and Travis Atkinson (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/traviswhayne\">@TravisWhayne<\/a>).
