{"id":3892,"date":"2012-05-04T12:00:34","date_gmt":"2012-05-04T11:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3892"},"modified":"2012-05-03T10:15:51","modified_gmt":"2012-05-03T09:15:51","slug":"short-takes-the-rise-of-the-personal-cloud-and-some-thoughts-on-oracle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/05\/short-takes-the-rise-of-the-personal-cloud-and-some-thoughts-on-oracle.htm","title":{"rendered":"Short takes: the rise of the personal cloud; what&#8217;s in an app; and some thoughts on Oracle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few highlights from my week that didn&#8217;t grow into blog posts of their own&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Oracle: complete, open and integrated<\/h3>\n<p>I was at an Oracle event earlier this week when I heard the following comment that amused me somewhat (non-attributed to protect the not-so-innocent):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Oracle likes to say they are complete, open and integrated &#8211; and they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Complete &#8211; as in &#8216;we have a long price list&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Open &#8211; as in &#8216;we&#8217;re not arrogant enough to think you buy everything from us&#8217;.<\/li>\n<li>Integrated &#8211; as in &#8216;if we own both sides of the connection we&#8217;ll sell you the integration&#8217;.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I don&#8217;t have enough experience of working with Oracle to know how true that is, but it certainly fits the impression I have of the company&#8230; I wonder what the Microsoft equivalent would be&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>The rise of the Personal Cloud<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been catching up with reading the paper copy of Computing that arrives ever fortnight (and yes, I do prefer the dead tree edition &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t generally read the online content without it). One of the main features on 22 March was about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/ctg\/analysis\/2162001\/analysis-rise-cloud-it-s-personal\">the rise of the personal cloud<\/a> &#8211; a contentious topic among some, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/03\/personal-cloud-call-it-what-you-want-ignore-it-at-your-peril.htm\">one to ignore at your peril as I highlighted in a recent post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One quote I particularly liked from the article was this one:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/ctg\/analysis\/2162001\/analysis-rise-cloud-it-s-personal\"><p>&#8220;The personal cloud isn&#8217;t so much the death of the PC as its demotion. The PC has become just another item in a growing arsenal of access devices.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/05\/network-access-control-does-its-job-but-is-a-dirty-network-such-a-bad-thing.htm\">all we need is for a few more IT departments to wake up to this<\/a>, and architect their enterprise to deliver device-agnostic services&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>What&#8217;s app?<\/h3>\n<p>In another Computing article, I was reading about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/ctg\/interview\/2165737\/interview-barclays-banks-innovation\">some of the technologies that Barclays is implementing<\/a> and it was interesting to read COO Shaygan Kheradpir&#8217;s view on apps:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/www.computing.co.uk\/ctg\/interview\/2165737\/interview-barclays-banks-innovation\"><p>&#8220;Many [&#8230;] tasks that happen on the front-line are [&#8230;] app-oriented [&#8230;].<\/p>\n<p>And what are apps? They are deep and narrow. They&#8217;re not like PC applications, which are broad and shallow. You want apps to do one, often complex, task.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sounds like Unix to me!
