{"id":3995,"date":"2012-06-08T12:00:33","date_gmt":"2012-06-08T11:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3995"},"modified":"2012-05-30T14:29:15","modified_gmt":"2012-05-30T13:29:15","slug":"registering-mscomctl-ocx-on-windows-7-x64-to-run-the-flac-front-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/06\/registering-mscomctl-ocx-on-windows-7-x64-to-run-the-flac-front-end.htm","title":{"rendered":"Registering MSCOMCTL.OCX on Windows 7 (x64) to run the FLAC Front End"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/04\/re-acquiring-my-digital-downloads.htm\">I&#8217;ve mentioned before that iTunes mangled my MP3 library and then a multiple disk failure on my ReadyNAS took it away completely<\/a>\u00a0and, eventually, I will re-rip the hundreds of CDs that (thankfully) I still have in my loft&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, I&#8217;ve been researching (aka asking followers on Twitter) what&#8217;s the best way to re-rip my music and the general\u00a0consensus\u00a0was to rip as <a href=\"http:\/\/flac.sourceforge.net\/\">Free Lossless Audio Codec (FLAC)<\/a>\u00a0and then convert to MP3 as required:<\/p>\n<p>[blackbirdpie url=&#8221;https:\/\/twitter.com\/GarryMartin\/status\/194536609302052865&#8243;]<\/p>\n<p>A couple of weeks ago, I <a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/flac\/\">downloaded FLAC from Sourceforge<\/a>\u00a0but the installer gave an error message, complaining that it failed to register\u00a0MSCOMCTL.OCX (on my Windows 7 x64) system.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/iamyouruser.blogspot.co.uk\/2008\/01\/flac-you-mscomctlocx.html\">Neil C. Obremski describes the problem in his 2008 blog post<\/a>\u00a0and the problem file is a Visual Basic 6.0 control which, not surprisingly, Microsoft no longer ships with Windows. Whilst there are unofficial downloads available, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/download\/details.aspx?id=10019\">Microsoft also makes the Visual Basic 6.0 Common Controls (MSCOMCTL.OCX and COMCTL32.OCX) available as free downloads<\/a>\u00a0but they are contained in a .EXE file that didn&#8217;t want to play ball either.<\/p>\n<p>No problem, 7-Zip opened the .EXE and I successfully extracted the file I wanted, copying it to C:\\Windows\\SysWOW64 on my machine.<\/p>\n<p>Following this, I dropped into a command prompt (running as an administrator) and typed:<\/p>\n<p><code>regsvr32 mscomctl.ocx<\/code><\/p>\n<p>With the OLE control extension (.OCX) registered, I was able to run the FLAC front end (although I actually used <a href=\"http:\/\/dbpoweramp.com\/cd-ripper.htm\">dBpoweramp<\/a> instead&#8230;
