{"id":4189,"date":"2012-07-31T19:36:04","date_gmt":"2012-07-31T18:36:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4189"},"modified":"2014-08-05T14:34:33","modified_gmt":"2014-08-05T13:34:33","slug":"traffic-lights-for-my-home-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/07\/traffic-lights-for-my-home-office.htm","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Traffic lights&#8221; for my home office"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s the school holidays, which means that working from home can be a little&#8230; noisy&#8230; at times. \u00a0Earlier today I saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hanselman.com\/blog\/IsDaddyOnACallABusyLightPresenceIndicatorForLyncForMyHomeOffice.aspx\">a blog post from Scott Hanselman where he had hooked a light up to his instant messenger status<\/a> to tell his family when he was on a call, or otherwise busy with work &#8211; and that gave me an idea&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Scott&#8217;s solution uses something called a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.busylight.com\/busylight-lync.html\">Busylight<\/a>\u00a0but a) I&#8217;m too tight to spend \u20ac49 on this and b) the geek in me thinks &#8220;surely I can rig up something using a few LEDs?&#8221;. One of the comments on Scott&#8217;s post led me to <a href=\"http:\/\/realstatus.codeplex.com\/\">an open source project called RealStatus<\/a> but that uses an expensive USB HID for the LEDs so doesn&#8217;t really move me much further forward&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/basic-red-green-led-bb.png?w=700&#038;ssl=1\" title=\"Basic Red\/Green LED Arduino and breadboard layout\" class=\"alignright\"  \/>I decided that I should use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2012\/03\/getting-started-with-arduino.htm\">my Arduino<\/a> instead&#8230; with the added bonus that involving the children in the project might get them &#8220;onboard&#8221; too&#8230; the trouble is that my electronics prototyping skills are still fairly rudimentary.<\/p>\n<p>As it happens, that&#8217;s not a problem &#8211; I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/arduino-traffic-light-controller\/\">an Arduino traffic light program for beginners<\/a> and, as I don&#8217;t have a yellow LED right now, I adapted it to what I do have &#8211; simple red\/green status (my son and I had fun trying different resistors to adjust the brightness of the LEDs)<\/p>\n<p>You can see the breadboard view here (generated with <a href=\"http:\/\/fritzing.org\/\">Fritzing<\/a> &#8211; I&#8217;m still working out how to make this into a schematic) and below is my Arduino code (which is <a href=\"https:\/\/gist.github.com\/3220401\/605252530ec27172467d102922ea061b1d488720\">also available on github<\/a> &#8211; although I might have worked on it a bit by the time you read this):<\/p>\n<p><dirtycode:noclick><br \/>\n\/\/ Pins for coloured LEDs<br \/>\nint red = 12;<br \/>\nint green = 13;<\/p>\n<p>void setup(){<br \/>\n  \/\/ Set up pins as output devices<br \/>\n  pinMode(red,OUTPUT);<br \/>\n  pinMode(green,OUTPUT);<br \/>\n}<\/p>\n<p>void loop(){<br \/>\n  \/\/ Change the lights<br \/>\n  \/\/ turnLightRed();<br \/>\n  turnLightGreen();<br \/>\n}<\/p>\n<p>void turnLightGreen(){<br \/>\n  \/\/ Turn off the red and turn on the green<br \/>\n  digitalWrite(red,LOW);<br \/>\n  digitalWrite(green,HIGH);<br \/>\n}<\/p>\n<p>void turnLightRed(){<br \/>\n  \/\/ Turn off the green and turn on the red<br \/>\n  digitalWrite(green,LOW);<br \/>\n  digitalWrite(red,HIGH);<br \/>\n}<br \/>\n<\/dirtycode><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s pretty simple really &#8211; I just call the <code>turnLightRed()<\/code> or <code>turnLightGreen()<\/code> function according to whether I am ready to accept visitors. In itself, that&#8217;s a bit limited but the next step will be to work out how to send commands to the Arduino over USB (for some integration with my instant messaging client, perhaps) or even using a messaging service (Twitter?) and some network connectivity&#8230;
