{"id":4409,"date":"2013-09-24T12:00:22","date_gmt":"2013-09-24T11:00:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4409"},"modified":"2013-09-18T00:40:39","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T23:40:39","slug":"wheel-fortune","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2013\/09\/wheel-fortune.htm","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;wheel of fortune&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, I wrote about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2013\/09\/the-white-book-of-big-data.htm\">White Book of Big Data<\/a> &#8211; a publication I co-authored last year at Fujitsu.<\/p>\n<p>One of the more interesting (for me) sections of the document was an idea from one of my colleagues, providing a model to determine next steps in forming a strategy for embracing a new approach (in this case to move forward towards gaining value from the use of a big data solution but it can be applied to other scenarios too).<\/p>\n<p>The model starts with a &#8220;wheel&#8221; diagram and, at the centre is the first decision point. All organisations exist to generate profit (even non-profits work on the same principles, they just don&#8217;t return those profits to shareholders). \u00a0There are two ways to increase profit: reducing cost; or increasing revenue.<\/p>\n<p>For each of the reduce cost\/increase revenue sectors, there are two more options: direct or indirect.<\/p>\n<p>These four selections\u00a0lead to a number of other\u00a0opportunities\u00a0and these may be prioritised to determine which areas to focus on in a\u00a0particular\u00a0business scenario.<\/p>\n<p>With those priorities highlighted, a lookup table can be used to suggest appropriate courses of action to take next.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s one of those models that&#8217;s simple and, I think, quite elegant.
