The groovy little black and white\u00a0hieroglyphs\u00a0were on every bus-shelter advert, leaflet and even business cards. \u00a0Some were in colour, and some either relied on the built in error correction to become a piece of art! I wasn&#8217;t convinced that they always made sense though &#8211; and it seemed I wasn&#8217;t alone&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/econsultancy.com\/uk\/blog\/7959-two-thirds-of-consumers-don-t-know-what-qr-codes-are-survey\">Some studies showed that consumers didn&#8217;t know what they were<\/a>. Others <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/blog\/security\/hackers-using-qr-codes-to-push-android-malware\/9522\">warned of malware hidden in QR links<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/shouldiuseaqrcode.com\/\">Some were cynical<\/a>. And some analysts warned of their\u00a0impending\u00a0demise:<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">QR codes are ugly. Give me ubiquitous, directional RFID instead. We won&#39;t be plagued with QR codes in 2012<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mike Gualtieri (@mgualtieri) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mgualtieri\/status\/116221713171218432?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 20, 2011<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Earlier today I was asked to join a business partner&#8217;s Yammer network. \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/news\/press\/2012\/jun12\/06-25msyammerpr.aspx\">This particular (Redmond-based) partner has a &#8220;special&#8221; interest in Yammer (ahem)<\/a>, so I dusted off my old, not-used-for-a-couple-of-years Yammer credentials, signed in and accepted the request. Yammer encouraged me to update my profile (fair enough&#8230; it was 2 years out of date), and then to download the mobile app (sure, why not?)&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>[imagine sound effect of record needle scratching and music coming to abrupt end&#8230;]<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Some mobile app developers are smart enough to realise that, when you navigate to a page on your PC that advertises their mobile app, you don&#8217;t actually want to go to\u00a0the\u00a0app store from the PC browser&#8230; so,\u00a0what&#8217;s the perfect way to send you there? Exactly! Provide a QR code, which can be scanned with a mobile device&#8217;s camera to jump instantly to the appropriate Apple App Store\/Google Play\/Windows Marketplace location.<\/p>\n<p>Yammer doesn&#8217;t do this.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it&#8217;s easy enough to search the App Store and download the app but, meh, why make it harder?\u00a0Make the user experience simple.
