{"id":5061,"date":"2013-11-28T12:00:18","date_gmt":"2013-11-28T12:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5061"},"modified":"2013-12-11T17:19:21","modified_gmt":"2013-12-11T17:19:21","slug":"remote-powershell-to-manage-exchange-even-without-the-exchange-management-shell-installed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2013\/11\/remote-powershell-to-manage-exchange-even-without-the-exchange-management-shell-installed.htm","title":{"rendered":"Remote PowerShell to manage Exchange, even without the Exchange Management Shell installed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following on from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2013\/11\/customising-the-behaviour-of-exchange-2013-web-apps-ecpeacowa.htm\">yesterday&#8217;s Exchange Admin Center\/Outlook Web App tips<\/a>, I thought I&#8217;d share another gem that came from Microsoft Exchange Premier Field Engineer and PowerShell author\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mikepfeiffer.net\/\">Mike Pieffer<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/mike_pfeiffer\">@mike_pfeiffer<\/a>) in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com\/training-courses\/core-solutions-of-exchange-server-2013-jump-start\">Microsoft Virtual Academy Core Solutions of Microsoft Exchange Server 2013 Jump Start course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, you&#8217;ll need to perform an operation on an Exchange Server and you won&#8217;t have the Exchange Management Shell installed. \u00a0You may be able to carry out the operation graphically using the Exchange Admin Center but, <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/heyscriptingguy\/archive\/2012\/01\/23\/learn-how-to-use-powershell-to-run-exchange-server-commands-remotely.aspx\">more likely, you&#8217;ll need to invoke a remote PowerShell session<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The magic commands (which need PowerShell v2 or later) use implicit remoting via the IIS PowerShell virtual directory (proxied via an Exchange server with the CAS role installed):<\/p>\n<p><code>$session = New-PSSession -ConfigurationName microsoft.exchange -ConnectionUri http:\/\/servername\/powershell<br \/>\nImport-PSSession $session<\/code><\/p>\n<p>After running these commands, you should be able to run Microsoft Exchange cmdlets, as long as you have the appropriate permissions assigned via Exchange&#8217;s Role Based Access Control mechanism.
