{"id":51,"date":"2005-01-17T18:18:00","date_gmt":"2005-01-17T18:18:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2005\/01\/discovering-unknown-devices-in-windows.htm"},"modified":"2007-06-11T22:01:59","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T21:01:59","slug":"discovering-unknown-devices-in-windows","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/01\/discovering-unknown-devices-in-windows.htm","title":{"rendered":"Discovering unknown devices in Windows"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--110598613658472455-->Whilst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/01\/problems-with-certain-nics-and-ris.htm\">developing my unattended Windows XP build<\/a>, I came across a number of devices that were not automatically detected by Windows.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes, right-clicking the unknown device in Device Manager and selecting the Update driver&#8230; option allowed Windows Update to connect to the Internet and locate updated drivers (which in turn identified the device and allowed me to download and <a href=\"http:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/?kbid=314479\">integrate the OEM drivers into the Windows XP installation source<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>On other occasions it was not so simple, and I needed to do some research to identify the device using the PCI device instance ID (found on the details page of the device properties).<\/p>\n<p>A couple of years back I was introduced to <a href=\"http:\/\/members.datafast.net.au\/dft0802\/downloads.htm\">Craig Hart&#8217;s PCI and AGP bus sniffer<\/a>. I could have just run the utility, but in this case I chose to search its companion file (<a href=\"http:\/\/members.datafast.net.au\/dft0802\/downloads\/pcidevs.txt\">pcidevs.txt<\/a>) for the vendor and device PCI IDs. Using this technique, I was able to identify my unknown device as the Broadcom (vendor 14E4) BCM4306 802.11g Wireless NIC (device 4320), which is also known as a Dell Wireless 1350.
