It was an impulse purchase but the reviews were good considering the low price point (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.gizmodo.co.uk\/2013\/09\/tescos-hudl-android-tablet-in-not-rubbish-shock\/\">Gizmodo<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.engadget.com\/2013\/10\/27\/tesco-hudl-review\/\">Engadget<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/01\/could-low-cost-tablets-actually-knock-the-ipad-off-its-perch.htm\">that \u00a3119 price tag meant the risk to me as a consumer was low<\/a>\u00a0(considering what I paid for an iPad 4 years ago, which admittedly is a premium device but has hardly stood the test of time&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>After a couple of days I knew I&#8217;d made the right decision &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/02\/adventures-with-android-a-few-tweaks-on-my-samsung-galaxy-s3-mini.htm\">I&#8217;ve been disappointed with Android on my phone<\/a> but on a tablet it&#8217;s really usable (the Hudl uses Android 4.2.2 JellyBean) &#8211; and Tesco have provided an almost stock distribution. <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/tesco-launcher.png?resize=57%2C34&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"57\" height=\"34\" \/>Even so, there are some &#8220;customisations&#8221; &#8211; a few apps and widgets to try and encourage more Tesco shopping, and a [T] launcher button in the bottom-left corner of the screen. \u00a0The apps and widgets are easy enough to move out of sight, but I really wanted to lose the Tesco Launcher [T]&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Rooting the tablet<\/h3>\n<p>Step one is to &#8220;root&#8221; the operating system &#8211; i.e. to give myself full access to all of the files and folders on the device. \u00a0Paul O&#8217;Brien (<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/paulobrien\">@paulobrien<\/a>) has a great post on his MoDaCo forum on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modaco.com\/topic\/365530-how-to-root-your-hudl-updated-latest-supported-rom-20131016200812\/\">rooting the Hudl<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>I fired up my Linux netbook (it still has some uses!),\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/loadbalancing.modaco.com\/download.php?file=hudl.system.withsu.20131016.200812.zip\">downloaded the ROMraid archive for the version of the Hudl software my device was running (JDQ39.20131016.200812)<\/a>\u00a0and extracted it but running <code>sudo .\/flashroot.hudl.linux.sh<\/code> returned <em>command not found<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After scratching my head for a few minutes I realised I also needed to <code>chmod 755 flashroot.hudl.linux.sh<\/code> to make it executable. \u00a0I tried the script again but this time the response was <em>cannot execute binary file<\/em> &#8211; it seems that the version of <code>rkflashtool.linux<\/code> included in the ROM download was for 64-bit Linux and my netbook only has a 32-bit installation.<\/p>\n<h4>Plan B<\/h4>\n<p>Being a good geek, I have a pile of media waiting to be &#8220;sorted out&#8221; including some Linux live CDs, so I fired that up on another PC and this time managed to flash the Hudl (I used an Ubuntu 13.10 live CD &#8211; CentOS 5.5 refused to play). \u00a0If you&#8217;re having trouble getting the device into the right state, then check out Matt Foot (aka\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/glossywhite\">@glossywhite<\/a>)&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modaco.com\/topic\/365530-how-to-root-your-hudl-updated-latest-supported-rom-20131016200812\/?p=2162321\">advice on MoDaCo<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Turn Hudl off.<\/li>\n<li>Connect via USB to PC.<\/li>\n<li>Hold down Volume Up (+), push the reset button for one sec (recessed hole with gold dot in it) and continue holding the Volume Up button.<\/li>\n<li>To check that this has put the Hudl in flashing mode, and to verify that it isn&#8217;t merely in charging mode, release Volume Up after around 10 seconds and tap once on the power button; if you see a battery, it has failed, so try again.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>I found that the Live CD didn&#8217;t want to execute anything from a USB stick or local hard disk in the PC (Windows file systems), so I copied the following files to \/home\/ubuntu:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">flashroot.hudl.linux.sh<br \/>\nrkflashtool-linux<br \/>\nsystem.backup.img<\/p>\n<p>I also chmodded and to make them executable, then ran <code>sudo .\/flashroot.hudl.linux.sh<\/code><\/p>\n<p>At this point, I saw lots of lines like:<\/p>\n<p><em>rkflashtool: info: writing flash memory at offset 0x00000000<\/em><\/p>\n<p>(up to 0x00341fe0) and then:<\/p>\n<p><em>rkflashtool: info: rkflashtool v5.1<br \/>\n<\/em><em>rkflashtool: info: Detected RK3188&#8230;<br \/>\n<\/em><em>rkflashtool: info: interface claimed<br \/>\n<\/em><em>rkflashtool: info: rebooting device&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The device then restarted in charging mode, and I powered it up as usual. Paul&#8217;s instructions say to install <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=eu.chainfire.supersu\">SuperSU<\/a> from the Google Play Store but it seemed to be installed already; however\u00a0I did update it.<\/p>\n<h3>Removing Tesco customisations<\/h3>\n<p>As I mentioned at the top of the post, the Hudl comes with a Tesco Launcher icon in the bottom-left of the screen and is also pre-loaded with a number of apps for Tesco services.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.modaco.com\/topic\/365572-modified-systemui-without-tesco-button\/\">Paul O&#8217;Brien has posted one method of removing the Tesco Launcher [T]<\/a>\u00a0but I decided to use a variation of <a href=\"http:\/\/akufu.com\/remove-tesco-branding-hudl\/\">Mr Akufu&#8217;s method<\/a>, with <a href=\"http:\/\/loadbalancing.modaco.com\/download.php?file=SystemUI.hudl.zip\">Paul&#8217;s hacked SystemUI.apk<\/a> file (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.modaco.com\/topic\/365536-removing-tesco-branding-from-hudl\/?p=2175613\">which can be used with the JDQ39.20131016.200812\u00a0firmware<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Extract SystemUI.apk from <a href=\"http:\/\/loadbalancing.modaco.com\/download.php?file=SystemUI.hudl.zip\">SystemUI.hudl.zip<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Using your method of choice, transfer the file to your device &#8211; I used Dropbox, and then selected the option to Export, then Save to SD card (Internal Storage) but others have suggested Bluetooth, or <a href=\"http:\/\/developer.android.com\/tools\/help\/adb.html\">ADB<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Install <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=web.oss.sshsftpDaemon&amp;hl=en\">Rooted SSH\/SFTP Daemon<\/a>\u00a0from the Google Play store and start it.<\/li>\n<li>Connect using your SSH client of choice (I used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiark.greenend.org.uk\/~sgtatham\/putty\/\">PuTTY<\/a>) over a Wi-Fi connection to the Hudl.<\/li>\n<li>Login as <code>root<\/code>, with password <code>abc123<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Issue the following commands:<br \/>\n<code>su<\/code><br \/>\n<code>mount -o remount,rw \/system<\/code><br \/>\n<code>cp \/system\/app\/SystemUI.apk\u00a0SystemUI.mybackup.apk<\/code> (I didn&#8217;t do this but it would have been sensible&#8230;)<br \/>\n<code>cp \/storage\/emulated\/legacy\/SystemUI.apk \/system\/app\/SystemUI.apk<\/code><\/li>\n<li>After this, the Hudl should reboot.<\/li>\n<li>Following restart, the Tesco button should be gone &#8211; use <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.rootuninstaller.free&amp;hl=en\">Root Uninstaller<\/a>\u00a0to disable (not remove) the Hudl Updates package.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>No more Tesco [T] on my <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23Hudl&amp;src=hash\">#Hudl<\/a> (thanks to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulOBrien\">@PaulOBrien<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MrAkufu\">@MrAkufu<\/a>) <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/epnh9FHXkN\">http:\/\/t.co\/epnh9FHXkN<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/t.co\/984g251Cvu\">pic.twitter.com\/984g251Cvu<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark Wilson (@markwilsonit) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/markwilsonit\/statuses\/440829294739460097\">March 4, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>If you want to go further, there&#8217;s another MoDaCo post that talks about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.modaco.com\/topic\/365647-speed-up-your-hudl-which-apks-to-remove\/\">removing all of the Tesco application packages<\/a>&#8230; and <a href=\"http:\/\/forums.androidcentral.com\/optimus-v-rooting-roms-hacks\/156703-guide-apks-their-purpose-safe-not-remove-big.html\">more information on which Android packages are safe to remove at Android Central<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just over a week ago, I bought a Tesco Hudl.
