{"id":5309,"date":"2014-08-18T16:20:27","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T15:20:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=5309"},"modified":"2014-08-26T21:52:27","modified_gmt":"2014-08-26T20:52:27","slug":"administering-office-365-using-powershell-updated-information-on-the-required-components","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/08\/administering-office-365-using-powershell-updated-information-on-the-required-components.htm","title":{"rendered":"Administering Office 365 using PowerShell: updated information on the required components"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve written before about\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2011\/05\/changing-the-primary-email-address-for-office-365-users.htm\">administering Office 365 from PowerShell<\/a> but the process has changed slightly over the years. \u00a0There are various articles out there on the web with methods and links but the key information (as at August 2014) is in a TechNet article titled <a href=\"http:\/\/aka.ms\/aadposh\">Manage Azure AD using Windows PowerShell<\/a>. \u00a0Yes, that&#8217;s right &#8211; <em>Azure<\/em> AD &#8211; because Windows Azure Active Directory is the authentication service used by Microsoft Online Services such as the Office 365 services.<\/p>\n<p>On my Windows 8.1 computer I already had the necessary .NET framework and PowerShell pre-requisites but I did need to download and install two more components before <code>Get-Command -Module msonline<\/code> would do anything for me:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/?LinkId=286152\">The Microsoft Online Services Sign-In Assistant for IT Professionals RTW<\/a>\u00a0(the version I used was\u00a07.250.4556.0, published on 17 February 2014).<\/li>\n<li>The Windows Azure AD Module for Windows PowerShell* (which depends on\u00a0the Microsoft Online Service Sign-In Assistant), which doesn&#8217;t come up in a search on the Microsoft Downloads Center but is linked from <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/jj151815.aspx\">the TechNet article I\u00a0mentioned above<\/a>\u00a0(<a href=\"http:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/p\/?linkid=236298\">32-bit<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/go.microsoft.com\/fwlink\/p\/?linkid=236297\">64-bit<\/a> versions).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>With these components\u00a0installed, I could authenticate against the service using my\u00a0normal credentials with <code>Import-Module MSOnline<\/code> and\u00a0<code>Connect-MsolService<\/code> and run administration cmdlets\u00a0from within PowerShell. \u00a0Note that in order to run Exchange cmdlets, you&#8217;ll need <a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/library\/jj984289(v=exchg.150).aspx\">a remote PowerShell session to Exchange<\/a>\u00a0(check out Greg Shields&#8217; TechNet magazine article\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-us\/magazine\/hh750396.aspx\">Manage Office 365 with Windows PowerShel<\/a><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">l<\/span>\u00a0for more details).
