More than 3 million people have tried an Hour of Code already, in an initiative that aims to dispel any myths\u00a0that computer programming\u00a0is difficult and to provide\u00a0parents, teachers and students across the nation with\u00a0an enjoyable introduction to coding. Code.org\u00a0hope that this will help build awareness of and confidence in the changes that have come in the September 2014 English school curriculum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/96B5-JGA9EQ?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>It&#8217;s not just in schools either &#8211; my employer\u00a0has\u00a024 &#8220;hour of code&#8221; workshops scheduled all over the country\u00a0for our technical staff to give\u00a0non-techies a\u00a0one-hour introduction to the basics of computer programming and there&#8217;s been a fantastic sign-up rate.<\/p>\n<p>Other IT companies are getting involved too (actually, <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.code.org\/about\/partners\">there&#8217;s an extensive list of partners<\/a>) including\u00a0Apple, who are hosting Hour of Code\u00a0workshops\u00a0in\u00a0Apple Stores across the world on 11 December (I&#8217;m hoping to get at least one of my sons to come along with me). It&#8217;s billed as &#8220;no experience needed&#8221; and for &#8220;ages 6-106&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>If computer programming is a mystery to you but it might be something of interest, <a href=\"http:\/\/uk.code.org\/\">find out more about the hour of code on the Code.org UK website<\/a>\u00a0or follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/codeorg\">@codeorg<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>And if the Hour of Code whets your appetite, you might like to check out some of these resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.codecademy.com\/\">Code Academy<\/a>\u00a0is simple, and focused on web\/online programming\u00a0with almost instant results.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.microsoftvirtualacademy.com\/\">Microsoft Virtual Academy<\/a>\u00a0provides\u00a0video tutorials and more, arranged into coherent courses.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/\">Khan Academy<\/a>\u00a0has a good interface and offers material on a additional topics too.<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.saylor.org\/pathways\/full-curricula\/#CS\">Saylor Academy&#8217;s computer science programme<\/a>\u00a0offers material that will help\u00a0studies to degree level.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\">Coursera<\/a>\u00a0provides free on-line classes from over 115 partners.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/\">Future Learn<\/a>\u00a0shows you how\u00a0to build a mobile game in one of the many courses offered to connect people and ideas.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/imagine\">Microsoft Imagine<\/a> helps you to get started in coding.<\/li>\n<li>There are <a href=\"http:\/\/learn.code.org\/\">another 20 hours of code<\/a> at the code.org studio.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>[Update 10 December 2014: added Microsoft Imagine to the list]<\/p>\n<p>[Update 14 December 2014: added 20 hours of code to the list]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Next week (8-14 December 2014) is\u00a0Computer Science Education Week and\u00a0the Hour of Code is coming to the UK.
