{"id":578,"date":"2005-01-25T15:31:00","date_gmt":"2005-01-25T15:31:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/markwilson.me.uk\/blog\/2005\/01\/gartners-top-predictions-for-2005-and.htm"},"modified":"2007-06-11T22:00:17","modified_gmt":"2007-06-11T21:00:17","slug":"gartners-top-predictions-for-2005-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/01\/gartners-top-predictions-for-2005-and.htm","title":{"rendered":"Gartner&#8217;s top predictions for 2005 and beyond"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--110666776194034189-->I&#8217;ve been reading <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/NewsLetterServlet?fcn=activityPublisher&amp;unique=6977768&amp;link=15292&amp;doc_cd=124887\">Gartner&#8217;s top predictions for 2005 and beyond<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the predictions, make interesting reading, for example the rise in &#8220;microcommerce&#8221; opportunities and the prediction that &#8220;by 2009, counterfeit reality will account for at least one major media and political scandal&#8221; (scary when translated into real-world connotations).<\/p>\n<p>Of more interest to me directly are the predictions that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#8220;Cyberattacks against software flaws will double by 2006&#8221; (although Gartner note that attacks against misconfigured software will actually decrease because vendors are beginning to ship software with more secure default configurations).<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;By 2007, three of the top 10 PC vendors will exit the market&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2004\/12\/ibm-sells-its-pc-business.htm\">IBM have already sold their PC business<\/a> since <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/resources\/124800\/124887\/our_top_predict.pdf\">the original Gartner research note<\/a> was written in November 2004).<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;By 2008, the technological differences between PCs, mobile devices, e-books, TVs and cellular phones will be eradicated&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;By 2015, 40% of today&#8217;s IT job roles will be lost to automation&#8221;.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If that last prediction is correct, it looks like I&#8217;d better start thinking about retraining as a plumber\/electrician\/builder&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been reading Gartner&#8217;s top predictions for 2005 and beyond.
