{"id":6025,"date":"2015-09-12T12:00:28","date_gmt":"2015-09-12T11:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6025"},"modified":"2015-09-13T01:36:47","modified_gmt":"2015-09-13T00:36:47","slug":"marketing-for-small-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/09\/marketing-for-small-businesses.htm","title":{"rendered":"Marketing for small businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve blogged about <a href=\"http:\/\/mkgeeknight.co.uk\/\">Milton Keynes Geek Night<\/a> many times over the last 3 and a half years &#8211; and it&#8217;s still just as good as ever. Last Thursday&#8217;s geek night (number 14) \u00a0had possibly the most eclectic mix of talks I&#8217;ve seen in a while though\u00a0&#8211; with a talk about Life on Mars as well as the usual collection of web design\/developer topics. And then there was Chloe Briggs&#8217; 5-minute talk about marketing for freelancers.<\/p>\n<p>Although Chloe (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/clever_cloggs\">@clever_cloggs<\/a>)\u00a0called it marketing for freelancers, I recognise a lot of this being applied in small-medium\u00a0businesses too. Indeed, it&#8217;s only the large enterprises I&#8217;ve worked for that don&#8217;t seem to &#8220;get it&#8221;. Even so, Chloe gave what I consider to be some very good advice, so I&#8217;m blogging it here!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Stand out from the crowd:\n<ul>\n<li>Use blogging as a tool<\/li>\n<li>Know your audience\n<ul>\n<li>Think about who your existing clients are and what type of clients would you like to work with?<\/li>\n<li>Target your content to this audience<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Look after existing clients:\n<ul>\n<li>It&#8217;s good to keep in touch\n<ul>\n<li>Send a well-crafted newsletter every month\/quarter\n<ul>\n<li>Click-throughs from email outperform social media<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Clients often appreciate a call every few months to check in\n<ul>\n<li>They will increase their loyalty to you and make them feel supported<\/li>\n<li>You will pick up extra work<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Productise your services:\n<ul>\n<li>Tiered packages make it easy to compare services<\/li>\n<li>Packages provide a jumping off point to start a discussion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Be a specialist\n<ul>\n<li>Create your own niche<\/li>\n<li>You can easily become knowledgeable about a particular product or service<\/li>\n<li>Creates trust and authority<\/li>\n<li>Increases your value<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Create residual income\n<ul>\n<li>Sell after-sales support for maintenance etc.<\/li>\n<li>This can be a package including other services, e.g. hosting, analytics reports, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Retaining your services on a monthly basis creates loyalty<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hopefully these tips can help others to build their businesses and attract\/retain the right clients.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve blogged about Milton Keynes Geek Night many times over the last 3 and a half years &#8211; and it&#8217;s still just as good as ever.
