{"id":6073,"date":"2015-09-28T12:00:37","date_gmt":"2015-09-28T11:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6073"},"modified":"2015-09-18T22:42:48","modified_gmt":"2015-09-18T21:42:48","slug":"posh-git","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/09\/posh-git.htm","title":{"rendered":"Posh-git!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been writing quite a lot of PowerShell recently and I decided that I really should look into using some kind of source control system.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve used Git before, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/04\/publishing-to-github-from-visual-studio.htm\">integrating GitHub with VisualStudio<\/a> and this time I wanted to integrate with the PowerShell ISE (by the way, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.happysysadm.com\/2014\/07\/how-to-open-powershell-ise-in-windows-81.html\">if you don&#8217;t have a Windows 8.1 shortcut for the PowerShell ISE, Carlo\/Happy SysAdmin describes how to find it<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s actually pretty straightforward using <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/dahlbyk\/posh-git\">Keith Dahlby&#8217;s posh-git scripts<\/a> (what a great name that is!) and <a href=\"https:\/\/desktop.github.com\/\">GitHub Desktop<\/a>.<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.somewhatabstract.com\/2014\/09\/01\/getting-posh-git-in-all-your-powershell-consoles-using-github-for-windows\/\"> Jeff Yates has a post that describes the process<\/a> but I found I needed to do a bit more to make it work for me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>My PowerShell ISE didn&#8217;t have a profile, so <a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/126469\/how-to-create-a-powershell-profile\/\">I created one<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.somewhatabstract.com\/2013\/08\/28\/git-integration-for-all-your-powershells-with-github-for-windows\/\">added the entries Jeff suggests<\/a> but, even so, I was getting errors in my console:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Resolve-Path : Cannot find path &#8216;C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\GitHub\\PoshGit_869d4c5159797755bc04749db47b166136e59132&#8217; because it does not exist.<br \/>\nAt C:\\Users\\username\\AppData\\Local\\GitHub\\shell.ps1:26 char:26<br \/>\n+ $env:github_posh_git = Resolve-Path &#8220;$env:LocalAppData\\GitHub\\PoshGit_869d4c51 &#8230;<br \/>\n+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br \/>\n+ CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (C:\\Users\\username\\&#8230;47b166136e59132:String) [Resolve-Path], ItemNotFoundException<br \/>\n+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : PathNotFound,Microsoft.PowerShell.Commands.ResolvePathCommand<\/p>\n<p>Resolve-Path : Cannot find path &#8216;C:\\profile.example.ps1&#8217; because it does not exist.<br \/>\nAt C:\\users\\username\\Documents\\WindowsPowerShell\\Microsoft.PowerShellISE_profile.ps1:3 char:4<br \/>\n+ .
