{"id":6109,"date":"2015-10-07T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2015-10-07T11:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6109"},"modified":"2015-12-24T16:43:26","modified_gmt":"2015-12-24T16:43:26","slug":"selectively-remove-tiles-from-the-office-365-app-launcher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/10\/selectively-remove-tiles-from-the-office-365-app-launcher.htm","title":{"rendered":"Selectively remove tiles from the Office 365 App Launcher"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This time last year, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.office.com\/2014\/10\/16\/organize-office-365-new-app-launcher-2\/\">Office 365 gained an App Launcher<\/a>\u00a0as part of a new navigation experience for\u00a0Office 365 on the web. Users can add and remove tiles from this launcher &#8211; and administrators can provide new tiles to point to corporate\u00a0resources &#8211; for example a CRM platform or the company intranet.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, not all customers want their users to\u00a0use all of the features\u00a0and functionality in Office 365 and the administrative controls to manage the\u00a0App\u00a0Launcher\u00a0for all users are limited. \u00a0I&#8217;d argue\u00a0that part of consuming a cloud service is adapting to new features and functionality as they are released but that doesn&#8217;t go down well with everyone,\u00a0often leaving me trying to find ways to disable or hide parts of the service. The following settings may help to selectively remove tiles from the Office 365 App Launcher but It&#8217;s not always straightforward &#8211; and it&#8217;s also subject to change (with <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.office.com\/2015\/09\/17\/the-new-office-365-admin-center-preview\/\">a new admin center\u00a0on the way<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Admin: revoke a user&#8217;s administrative rights.<\/li>\n<li>Instant messaging and web conferencing:\u00a0remove the Skype for Business Online licence and this functionality will disappear (there is no\u00a0associated tile).<\/li>\n<li>Mail, Calendar, People, Tasks: remove the Exchange Online licence and these tiles will go too.<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive for Business, Sites, Office Web Apps: remove the SharePoint Online licence (which also requires that you remove the Office Online licence).<\/li>\n<li>Office 365 Store: a switch was\u00a0recently added to disable this tile, under Service Settings, User Purchasing,\u00a0Display Office 365 App Store Tile.<\/li>\n<li>OneDrive for Business: hide\u00a0in\u00a0the SharePoint Admin Center settings, under show or hide options.<\/li>\n<li>Office 365 groups: Using PowerShell against\u00a0Exchange Online, <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-US\/Article\/Disable-Group-creation-cf0889c0-b287-4f45-bce7-42e30963f1f3\">edit the Outlook Web Access policy<\/a> with <code>Set-OwaMailboxPolicy -GroupCreationEnabled $False -Identity PolicyName<\/code>. If you only want to apply the change to a subset of users, create a new policy and apply it accordingly.<\/li>\n<li>Sites: hide in the SharePoint Admin Center settings, under show or hide options.<\/li>\n<li>Delve: turn off the Office Graph in the SharePoint Admin Center settings. Delve will still be there in parts though: for example when users\u00a0access their\u00a0profile.<\/li>\n<li>Sway: turn off under Service Settings, Sway,\u00a0Let people in your organization use Sway. <del>Unfortunately it won&#8217;t remove the tile<\/del> [update: <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/3075256\">yes it will now!<\/a>].<\/li>\n<li>Video: in the SharePoint Admin Center settings, under Streaming Video Service, disable streaming video through Azure Media Services and disable the Video Portal.<\/li>\n<li>Yammer: for this one you&#8217;re between a rock and a hard place: Yammer Basic is anarchic; Convert to Yammer Enterprise and the tile will be visible to users &#8211; you cannot turn it off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of these options merely hide capabilities &#8211; they may not be entirely disabled &#8211; and my recommendation would always be to leave settings enabled and teach users how to make use of the platform. \u00a0In\u00a0particular, turning off the Office Graph may have wider reaching implications.<\/p>\n<h3>Further reading<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/Meet-the-Office-365-app-launcher-79f12104-6fed-442f-96a0-eb089a3f476a\">Meet the Office 365 App Launcher<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This time last year, Office 365 gained an App Launcher\u00a0as part of a new navigation experience for\u00a0Office 365 on the web.
