{"id":6135,"date":"2015-10-12T12:00:29","date_gmt":"2015-10-12T11:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6135"},"modified":"2015-10-13T12:06:33","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T11:06:33","slug":"tools-for-troubleshooting-outlook-autodiscover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/10\/tools-for-troubleshooting-outlook-autodiscover.htm","title":{"rendered":"Tools for troubleshooting Outlook autodiscover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In my post last week about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/10\/office-365-and-proxy-servers-like-oil-and-water.htm\">Office 365 and proxy servers<\/a>,\u00a0I mentioned issues with Outlook autodiscover. \u00a0These were not exactly easy to troubleshoot, often with multiple subject matter experts looking\u00a0from\u00a0different angles (network, client applications, Exchange, firewalls, etc.). During the process, we used a few tools (as well as examining the traffic hitting the proxy servers) and I thought I&#8217;d highlight them here (if only for my own future reference):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The obvious starting point\u00a0is the Outlook Autodiscover tests on the <a href=\"http:\/\/testconnectivity.microsoft.com\">Microsoft Remote Connectivity Analyzer<\/a>\u00a0(RCA). I was using the Office 365 version but one of the other SMEs working on the issues suggested that the Exchange version\u00a0is a better test as it doesn&#8217;t have hard coded addresses in it &#8211; your mileage my vary.<\/li>\n<li>Next up\u00a0are some handy tests built into Outlook:\u00a0<code>Ctrl+right click<\/code> on the Outlook icon in the task bar and you&#8217;ll see various tools including Connection Status and Test Email Auto-Configuration.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/08\/some-tools-in-outlook-2013-for-diagnosing-exchange-connectivity-issues.htm\">\u00a0I&#8217;ve written about these before<\/a>&#8230; although\u00a0they&#8217;re worth mentioning again!<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/What-is-the-Enable-logging-troubleshooting-option-0fdc446d-d1d4-42c7-bd73-74ffd4034af5\">Outlook logging<\/a> is another option (although it doesn&#8217;t create the olkdisc.log file in Outlook 2013). More details are in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/kb\/2862843\">Microsoft knowledge base article\u00a02862843<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/cfs-file.ashx\/__key\/CommunityServer-Components-PostAttachments\/00-03-34-95-63\/AutodiscoverTest.zip\">Kip Ng&#8217;s standalone autodiscover test tool (autodiscovertest.exe)<\/a> is very useful when you can&#8217;t get network access to the RCA. <a href=\"http:\/\/eightwone.com\/2010\/08\/15\/standalone-autodiscover-test\/\">Michel de Rooij summarises\u00a0it in his post<\/a>\u00a0and there&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.technet.com\/b\/provtest\/archive\/2010\/08\/13\/exchange-server-2010-sp1-beta-hosting-deployment-part-9-autodiscover.aspx\">more information in\u00a0Kip&#8217;s post<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Finally, <a href=\"https:\/\/ewseditor.codeplex.com\/\">EWS Editor<\/a>\u00a0is a useful tool for testing Exchange Web Services, including troubleshooting Autodiscover.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In my post last week about Office 365 and proxy servers,\u00a0I mentioned issues with Outlook autodiscover. \u00a0These were not exactly easy to troubleshoot, often with multiple subject matter experts looking\u00a0from\u00a0different angles (network, client applications, Exchange, firewalls, etc.).
