{"id":6242,"date":"2015-11-26T12:00:25","date_gmt":"2015-11-26T12:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6242"},"modified":"2015-11-25T23:41:10","modified_gmt":"2015-11-25T23:41:10","slug":"troubleshooting-onedrive-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/11\/troubleshooting-onedrive-business.htm","title":{"rendered":"Troubleshooting OneDrive for Business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve written previously about the OneDrive for Business sync client &#8211; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/09\/onedrive-for-business-lots-of-cloud-storage-terrible-sync-client.htm\">I was pretty critical of it too<\/a>. Since then, I&#8217;ve been working with OneDrive for Business every day on my work PC and it generally works well for me. \u00a0It&#8217;s not all a bed of roses though. I&#8217;ve had significant challenges with OneDrive in\u00a0one customer implementation\u00a0but part of the issue would appear to be their PC build, compounded by the approach taken to applying Microsoft updates.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn&#8217;t help though that some Microsoft updates actually break OneDrive &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/3085566\">13 October 2015 update for Office 2013 (KB3085566)<\/a>\u00a0prevents OneDrive for Business from syncing and needs\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/2986219\">an additional update from 21 October 2013 (KB2986219)<\/a>. And those are Office updates &#8211; separate to the OneDrive for Business client updates (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/3085509\">KB3085509<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/3101505\">KB3101505<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m hoping that <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.office.com\/2015\/09\/30\/onedrive-for-business-sync-client-preview-and-new-browser-mobile-it-control-and-developer-experiences\/\">the new unified OneDrive sync client<\/a> will improve things further. After all, Microsoft are claiming that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;First and foremost, we\u2019re delivering a rock-solid new sync experience.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Great! That&#8217;s exactly what&#8217;s needed.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0new client (based on the consumer OneDrive client, which I think has its roots in Windows Live Mesh, rather than in Groove) introduces selective sync, removes some previous item count and file size limits and gets away from having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/07\/the-onedrive-thats-really-two-drives.htm\">two clients for OneDrive and OneDrive for Business<\/a>. It&#8217;s also coming alongside improvements to the browser and mobile experiences, and changing to external sharing options (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.onedrive.com\/meet-the-new-onedrive-for-business\/\">there&#8217;s more information on the OneDrive blog<\/a>)\u00a0but, for now, it&#8217;s an early preview and unfortunately not available for Windows 8.x.<\/p>\n<p>Trying to fix my customer&#8217;s issues has led me to some useful resources for troubleshooting OneDrive for Business though &#8211; including an Office Support article on <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/Fix-OneDrive-for-Business-sync-problems-e12c6a8b-4bbe-4391-9c23-1a52b55a1967\">Fixing OneDrive for Business Sync Problems<\/a>\u00a0and a <a href=\"http:\/\/support2.microsoft.com\/common\/survey.aspx?scid=sw;en;3790&amp;showpage=1\">OneDrive for Business Sync Issues Troubleshooter<\/a>.\u00a0I&#8217;m not sure how well-known\u00a0this second resource is, but it walks through a number of scenarios to help resolve problems, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/article\/Update-the-OneDrive-for-Business-sync-app-49771c73-e7ad-4d26-bff1-50bb12a83817\">Making sure the most current version of the sync app is installed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/2933738\">Checking sync restrictions and limitations<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/article\/Repair-sync-connections-in-OneDrive-for-Business-21aac895-9f32-4e3e-a75a-6f12824f0975\">Repairing sync connections<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Reviewing conflicts.<\/li>\n<li>Checking web browser settings.<\/li>\n<li>Clearing the Microsoft Office Upload Center cache.<\/li>\n<li>Stopping and re-syncing libraries.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/3038627\">Resetting the OneDrive for Business cache<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Checking that syncing is allowed for a library.<\/li>\n<li>Checking credentials (and more browser settings).<\/li>\n<li>Repairing the OneDrive for Business or Office\u00a0installation.<\/li>\n<li>Reinstalling OneDrive for Business or Office.<\/li>\n<li>Resetting Internet Explorer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Some of this is good practice, some is standard troubleshooting (clearing caches, reinstalling applications)\u00a0but hopefully most people won&#8217;t need to go much further than the first few items.
