What I didn&#8217;t write about though was the problems that a simple repair to OneDrive for Business (acting on advice to\u00a0resolve some sync issues on my client) caused for me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/Repair-sync-connections-in-OneDrive-for-Business-21aac895-9f32-4e3e-a75a-6f12824f0975\">The OneDrive for Business repair operation works as follows<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/Repair-sync-connections-in-OneDrive-for-Business-21aac895-9f32-4e3e-a75a-6f12824f0975\">\n<ul>\n<li>Disconnects all libraries that were experiencing sync problems.<\/li>\n<li>Reconnects these libraries. This means <b class=\"ocpUI\">Repair<\/b> downloads and syncs the current server version of each library, as if you were syncing for the first time.<\/li>\n<li>Creates an archive copy of any file that had unsynced changes and places these files in a library folder under C:\\users\\<i>username<\/i>\\OneDrive for Business archives\\.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So,\u00a0if you are using that full 1TB of storage&#8230; you&#8217;d better have a good network connection to pull\u00a0the entire contents of the library from the cloud (which is why <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.onedrive.com\/meet-the-new-onedrive-for-business\/\">the next version of the\u00a0OneDrive\u00a0client has selective sync<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>In my case, I&#8217;m only using a few GB but, because I moved my entire Documents folder to OneDrive a few months ago, my OneNote notebooks were part of the data that was pulled down\u00a0from the cloud.<\/p>\n<p>I rely heavily on OneNote &#8211; I stopped using paper notebooks when I left my last job, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/06\/one-month-with-the-surface-pro-3.htm\">my everyday device\u00a0is a Surface Pro 3<\/a> (which I find ideally suited to note-taking) &#8211; and\u00a0here&#8217;s the lesson I learned:<\/p>\n<p><em>OneNote and OneDrive for Business do not (always) play together nicely.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It should work &#8211; there&#8217;s\u00a0even Microsoft advice for <a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-gb\/article\/Move-a-OneNote-notebook-to-OneDrive-0af0a141-0bdf-49ab-9e50-45dbcca44082\">moving a OneNote notebook to OneDrive<\/a> (and the same process works for OneDrive for Business) but it seems the\u00a0mistake I made was to move all of my files in Windows Explorer.\u00a0Whilst researching this blog post I&#8217;ve found Microsoft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/kb\/2819334\">OneNote syncing best practices (KB2819334)<\/a>\u00a0and what I should have done is move the OneNote notebooks from within OneNote&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>After the\u00a0OneDrive for Business repair, I was left with a\u00a0.ms-one-stub file which Explorer reported as being 1KB in size. 6 months of notes had disappeared &#8211; and opening OneNote didn&#8217;t follow the stub and magically pick up my notes. I felt physically sick. I thought I\u00a0had\u00a0two copies &#8211; one on the PC and one in OneDrive for Business. But no, OneDrive for Business <em>was<\/em> my backup &#8211; and it had &#8220;eaten&#8221; my work.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, there was another backup copy. It wasn&#8217;t current, but it was only a couple of days out of date, rather than starting from scratch. I found that <a href=\"https:\/\/community.office365.com\/en-us\/f\/172\/p\/319703\/926312#926312\">OneNote stores a copy of notes in C:\\Users\\<em>username<\/em>\\AppData\\Local\\Microsoft\\OneNote\\15.0\\Backup<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>That location has a folder for each notebook. Each folder contains\u00a0a OneDrive recycle bin (OneNote_RecycleBin) and copies of \u00a0my .one files\u00a0for each section, with a date when the backup was taken &#8211; for example project.one (On 22-11-2015).one. I&#8217;m not sure when the backup is taken (I&#8217;ve made changes to sections today that are still not reflected in the OneNote backup, but\u00a0losing a couple of days is vastly superior to losing 6 months.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the new information about the correct way to sync OneNote to OneDrive for Business, I&#8217;m not sure I completely trust it.
