{"id":6261,"date":"2016-01-04T12:00:46","date_gmt":"2016-01-04T12:00:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6261"},"modified":"2016-04-24T20:51:14","modified_gmt":"2016-04-24T19:51:14","slug":"short-takes-file-folder-management-command-line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/01\/short-takes-file-folder-management-command-line.htm","title":{"rendered":"Short takes: file and folder management from the command line"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Turning more open tabs and notes into mini-blog posts&#8230;<\/p>\n<h3>Some Unix commands\u00a0when working with directories<\/h3>\n<p>A couple of months\u00a0back, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2015\/10\/fscked-up-mac-creating-a-backup-in-os-x-single-user-mode.htm\">having to hurriedly back up my Mac after the file system got corrupted<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Along the way I had to pick up some Unix commands that were previously outside my vocabulary&#8230; worth noting here for future reference:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.linuxquestions.org\/questions\/linux-newbie-8\/how-to-find-the-total-number-of-files-in-a-folder-510009\/\">Counting the number of files in a directory<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<code>ls | wc -l<\/code><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/unix.stackexchange.com\/questions\/185764\/how-do-i-get-the-size-of-a-directory-on-the-command-line\">Getting the size of a directory<\/a>\u00a0with\u00a0<code>du -sh<\/code><\/li>\n<li>Shutdown immediately with <code>shutdown -h now<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Force deleting a folder on Windows<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been cleaning down a PC that is no longer needed for regular use, but we&#8217;re hanging onto as a spare PC.
