{"id":6395,"date":"2016-05-14T16:03:38","date_gmt":"2016-05-14T15:03:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6395"},"modified":"2016-05-16T10:03:34","modified_gmt":"2016-05-16T09:03:34","slug":"adventures-robocopy-exe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/05\/adventures-robocopy-exe.htm","title":{"rendered":"Adventures with robocopy.exe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been a while since I had to make copies of large numbers of files in complex directory structures from the Windows command prompt but,\u00a0faced\u00a0with the need to take a\u00a0backup within a command line environment (the WinRE Command Prompt), I needed to refresh my Windows command line skills. \u00a0There&#8217;s loads of advice out there on the Internet (most of it subjective) but the general consensus seems to be that <a href=\"http:\/\/ss64.com\/nt\/xcopy.html\">the Extended Copy command (<code>xcopy.exe<\/code>) is deprecated<\/a> and has been replaced in recent versions of Windows by the Robust File Copy command (<code>robocopy.exe<\/code>). Of course, there are many alternatives but they are not natively provided in WinRE!<\/p>\n<p>(Some of the\u00a0more useful articles I found are <a href=\"http:\/\/stackoverflow.com\/a\/24121244\/1000757\">Nicholas Tyler&#8217;s reply on Stack Overflow<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/superuser.com\/a\/1004069\">Oliver Muchai&#8217;s reply on Super User<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hanselman.com\/blog\/XCopyConsideredHarmfulRobocopyOrXXCopyOrSyncBack.aspx\">Scott Hanselman&#8217;s blog post from 2007<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ss64.com\/nt\/robocopy.html\">Robocopy has loads of options<\/a> but the ones I selected in the end were:<\/p>\n<p><code>robocopy sourcefolder targetfolder \/MIR \/ZB \/XJ \/R:3 \/W:1 \/log:filename.txt<\/code><\/p>\n<p>to make a mirror copy of the data, in restartable mode (to survive network glitches), using backup mode\u00a0in the case of an access denied error, to exclude\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/msdn.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/library\/windows\/desktop\/bb968829\">Junction Points<\/a>, to retry 3 times on failure, waiting 1 second each time (compared with the defaults of 1 million and 30 seconds respectively) and to log to the chosen file.<\/p>\n<p>The <code>\/XJ<\/code> switch was added\u00a0as a late addition after some abortive attempts ended up with recursive Application Data folders. Some people have erroneously referred to this as a bug in Robocopy &#8211; actually it&#8217;s caused by Windows&#8217; attempts to\u00a0prevent application developers writing to system locations (and forcing them to write to the user profile instead, as described by <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-files\/why-are-there-multiple-layers-of-application-data\/4ec2c92c-a691-432b-b86a-c76d2b9a3faa\">&#8220;DaddyMan&#8221; on a Microsoft Forum post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-files\/why-are-there-multiple-layers-of-application-data\/4ec2c92c-a691-432b-b86a-c76d2b9a3faa\"><p>&#8220;The Application Data folder is actually a junction, which points back to its parent folder.<br \/>\n[%username]\\AppData\\Local\\Application Data\\<br \/>\npoints to<br \/>\n[%username]\\AppData\\Local\\&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>and by\u00a0Shawn Keene (<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LtCmdrKeene\">@LtCmdrKeene<\/a>) in <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-files\/multiple-occurances-of-same-file\/ac11fe50-e945-e011-9577-d485645a8348\">another, similar, post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_7-files\/multiple-occurances-of-same-file\/ac11fe50-e945-e011-9577-d485645a8348\"><p>&#8220;[Any time] an application tries to save a file to a naughty location (such as C:\\Windows or C:\\Program Files), Windows will force the actual save to end up at a place inside your user folder instead (C:\\Users\\Username\\LocalSettings\\VirtualStore\\Program Files). \u00a0It tricks the program into thinking that the file really did go to the Program Files folder, but in reality it&#8217;s somewhere inside your user folder.<\/p>\n<p>This [virtualisation] (tricking the program) is required so that badly-created apps that save to naughty locations will still work. \u00a0The alternative is that the program tries to save and then crashes when it can&#8217;t access the Program Files folder. \u00a0If Windows didn&#8217;t do this, the program would require administrator access every time it runs &#8212; which is very insecure, plus would make the program impossible to use in corporate environments where users aren&#8217;t allowed to be administrators.<\/p>\n<p>Rest assured that the multiple layers you are seeing are a result of folder redirection and [virtualisation] (also known as\u00a0junction\u00a0points). \u00a0There&#8217;s no need to clean these up or correct it, and you are well advised to avoid exploring those files.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Finally, I needed to remove the folders that I had accidentally created with recursive Application Data folders inside (I counted 25 in one case!).\u00a0Neither Windows nor the Windows Command Prompt (<code>del<\/code> and <code>rmdir<\/code> commands) could do this, resulting in &#8220;too long&#8221; errors but\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/superuser.com\/users\/36266\/aaron-solution-evangelist\">Super User Aaron<\/a> has <a href=\"http:\/\/superuser.com\/a\/478883\/404607\">the answer<\/a>\u00a0(which is a variation on the method <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2005\/11\/watch-out-for-long-path-names-on-ntfs.htm#comment-64858\">Bob Coss commented on one of my own old blog posts<\/a>):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Create an empty directory with <code>mkdir empty<\/code>, then use <code>robocopy empty\\ \"Application Data\\\" \/mir\"<\/code> which will remove the whole directory tree.
