{"id":6619,"date":"2016-10-17T12:00:07","date_gmt":"2016-10-17T11:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6619"},"modified":"2016-10-16T20:26:37","modified_gmt":"2016-10-16T19:26:37","slug":"removing-ads-from-the-amazon-kindle-fire-lock-screen-without-root","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/10\/removing-ads-from-the-amazon-kindle-fire-lock-screen-without-root.htm","title":{"rendered":"Removing ads from the Amazon Kindle Fire lock screen (without root)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, I wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/10\/installing-google-play-store-on-an-amazon-kindle-fire-hd.htm\">installing the Google Play Store on my Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8<\/a> (5th generation) but one point I made was that the script I used didn&#8217;t remove the Amazon lock-screen ads as it suggested it would.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s possible to pay \u00a310 extra when you buy your Kindle Fire to have the ads removed from the lock screen&#8230; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/forum\/kindle\/ref=cm_cd_et_md_pl?_encoding=UTF8&amp;cdForum=Fx3IRFCNF3E5K2W&amp;cdMsgID=MxWMIT1ZKJEGC0&amp;cdMsgNo=24&amp;cdPage=1&amp;cdSort=oldest&amp;cdThread=Tx2KCAQUFHVMNA3#MxWMIT1ZKJEGC0https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/forum\/kindle\/ref=cm_cd_et_md_pl?_encoding=UTF8&amp;cdForum=Fx3IRFCNF3E5K2W&amp;cdMsgID=MxWMIT1ZKJEGC0&amp;cdMsgNo=24&amp;cdPage=1&amp;cdSort=oldest&amp;cdThread=Tx2KCAQUFHVMNA3#MxWMIT1ZKJEGC0\">some people have had success in getting theirs removed by asking Amazon Customer Services nicely<\/a>. Alternatively,\u00a0if you have the tech skills, <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/amazon-fire\/general\/removing-lock-screen-ads-root-t3218946\">I&#8217;ve found a fix, thanks to Vlasp over on the XDADevelopers forums<\/a>\u00a0and now my Fire\u00a0is ad-free (although I\u00a0have to admit the ads have previously inspired me to make the odd purchase)!<\/p>\n<p>Just\u00a0as when I installed the Google Play Store, I first had to unhide\u00a0Developer Options (by tapping 7 times on the device serial number in Settings) and enable ADB (the Android Debug Bridge). After connecting to\u00a0a\u00a0PC with a USB cable and accepting the connection, I was able to use\u00a0ADB to control the settings on the Kindle Fire.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/amazon-fire-developer-options.png?resize=480%2C91&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Enable ADB in Developer Options (Debugging)\" width=\"480\" height=\"91\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/amazon-fire-allow-connect.png?resize=435%2C167&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Allow connections from the PC to the Kindle Fire\" width=\"435\" height=\"167\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/125769\/how-to-install-and-use-abd-the-android-debug-bridge-utility\/\">HowToGeek has an article about installing ADB<\/a> but I didn&#8217;t do that&#8230; I used the copy that came with the script I had previously used to install the Google Play Store (from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rootjunky\">@RootJunky<\/a>) &#8211; simply by opening up the command prompt and changing directory to the folder that had <code>adb.exe<\/code> in it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Then, I ran the commands that <a href=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/amazon-fire\/general\/removing-lock-screen-ads-root-t3218946\">Vlasp outlines in his XDADevelopers forum post<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote cite=\"http:\/\/forum.xda-developers.com\/amazon-fire\/general\/removing-lock-screen-ads-root-t3218946\"><p><code>adb shell<br \/>\npm clear com.amazon.kindle.kso<br \/>\npm hide com.amazon.kindle.kso<br \/>\nexit<br \/>\nadb reboot<\/code><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/amazon-fire-remove-ads.png?resize=499%2C332&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Commands to remove ads from Amazon Fire (via ADB)\" width=\"499\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And, once the Kindle restarted, there were no more ads*! \u00a0Just remember to turn ADB off again on the Kindle.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/amazon-fire-no-ads.png?resize=480%2C768&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8 lock screen with ads removed\" width=\"480\" height=\"768\" \/><\/p>\n<p>*Sometimes the ads may return &#8211; just repeat the process and they will be banished again for a while&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday, I wrote about installing the Google Play Store on my Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8 (5th generation) but one point I made was that the script I used didn&#8217;t remove the Amazon lock-screen ads as it suggested it would.
