That&#8217;s not really a problem &#8211; once it&#8217;s shut down, a power cycle to the socket (switch on\/off) will allow it to\u00a0boot up but there is another way (ignoring the purchase of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pi-supply.com\/product\/pi-supply-raspberry-pi-power-switch\/\">expensive in-line power switches<\/a>*, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msldigital.com\/pages\/more-information\">daughter boards to make the Pi pick up an infra-red remote control signal<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/raspi.tv\/2012\/making-a-reset-switch-for-your-rev-2-raspberry-pi\">Alex Eames blogged details to fit a reset switch to a Raspberry Pi<\/a> (which I may well do) but what about the Raspberry Pi Zero?\u00a0My son uses one of these plugged into our TV to practice his Python programming and it&#8217;s plugged into a USB wall socket so a power cycle restarts several USB devices or alternatively, cables need to be pulled.<\/p>\n<p>Well, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/forums\/viewtopic.php?f=91&amp;t=39594\">a\u00a0bit more reading<\/a> led me to the idea of shorting GPIO pins 5 and 6, and then some experimentation showed me all I have to do it touch\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/pinout.xyz\/pinout\/pin5_gpio3\">pin 5<\/a> with a bent paperclip to turn on the Pi!<\/p>\n<div class=\"jetpack-video-wrapper\"><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/apuQDPyC4mY?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<p>So, shutdown as normal from the OS. And startup\u00a0with a &#8220;hotwiring&#8221; trick!<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve since found that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.raspberrypi.org\/forums\/viewtopic.php?f=63&amp;t=131030\">the Pi Zero can also be started by shorting the two pins labelled &#8220;Run&#8221; next to GPIO 37 and 39<\/a> (connect the pins and then disconnect again) &#8211; so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=on61PMxM4Zg\">it&#8217;s also possible to fit a switch<\/a> in a similar manner to Alex Eames&#8217; advice for the full-size Pi.<\/p>\n<p>One thing to be aware of if a switch is fitted is that it can be used to turn on the Pi but shouldn&#8217;t be used to turn it off as it just kills the power and could lead to software corruption or even hardware damage.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*Incidentally, whilst writing this post I came across <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/charger-raspberry-BlackBerry-Android-Samsung-BLACK\/dp\/B00F9Q6TNW\">an inexpensive in-line USB switch<\/a>.
