{"id":6892,"date":"2017-01-15T16:29:25","date_gmt":"2017-01-15T16:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=6892"},"modified":"2017-01-15T16:29:25","modified_gmt":"2017-01-15T16:29:25","slug":"preventing-dnsmasq-running-daemon-service-raspberry-pi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2017\/01\/preventing-dnsmasq-running-daemon-service-raspberry-pi.htm","title":{"rendered":"Preventing dnsmasq from running as a daemon (service) on a Raspberry Pi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago, I wrote a post about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2014\/10\/raspberry-pi-infrastructure-server-dns-dhcp-tftp.htm\">running a Raspberry Pi as a home infrastructure server<\/a> (DNS, DHCP, TFTP, etc.). Now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2016\/09\/first-weeks-synology-diskstation-nas.htm\">my Synology NAS is doing that for me<\/a> (well, the DNS and DHCP at least &#8211; TFTP is less critical as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2008\/07\/configuring-a-cisco-ip-phone-for-voip-using-sip.htm\">my Cisco 7940 IP Phone<\/a> just sits there taking up desk space most of the time) so I don&#8217;t need the Pi to provide those services.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, when I migrated DNS and DHCP a few months ago, I just stopped the service with <code>sudo\u00a0service dnsmasq stop<\/code> so, after a power outage last week, when the Pi came back up, so did dnsmasq &#8211; and having two DNS\/DHCP servers on the network produced some strange results (as might be expected&#8230;).<\/p>\n<p>So, to do the job properly, I ran <code>sudo\u00a0nano \/etc\/default\/dnsmasq<\/code>\u00a0and changed the ENABLED=1 line to ENABLED=0. That should prevent dnsmasq from running as a service but leaves the configuration intact if I ever need to bring it back online.<\/p>\n<p>A quick <code>sudo reboot<\/code> and <code>sudo\u00a0service dnsmasq\u00a0status<\/code> is all that&#8217;s needed to check that dnsmasq\u00a0stays disabled.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/images\/pi-no-dnsmasq.png?resize=397%2C251&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"dnsmasq, not running\" width=\"397\" height=\"251\" \/><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some time ago, I wrote a post about running a Raspberry Pi as a home infrastructure server (DNS, DHCP, TFTP, etc.).
