{"id":7060,"date":"2017-05-11T21:43:00","date_gmt":"2017-05-11T20:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/?p=7060"},"modified":"2017-05-11T21:43:00","modified_gmt":"2017-05-11T20:43:00","slug":"windows-network-connection-status-icon-ncsi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2017\/05\/windows-network-connection-status-icon-ncsi.htm","title":{"rendered":"The Windows Network Connection Status Icon (NCSI)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night, whilst working in the Premier Inn close to the office, I noticed the browser going to an interesting URI after I connected to the hotel Wi-Fi. \u00a0That URI was http:\/\/www.msftconnecttest.com\/redirect and <a href=\"https:\/\/community.spiceworks.com\/topic\/1644424-what-must-be-unblocked-for-network-icon-to-not-say-no-internet-connection?page=1#entry-5876238\">a little more\u00a0research tells me it&#8217;s used\u00a0by Windows 10 to detect whether the PC has an Internet connection or not<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The feature is actually the Network Connection Status Icon (NCSI) and, more accurately, the URIs used are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>http:\/\/www.msftncsi.com\/ncsi.txt (for Windows 10 version 1507 and 1511, also known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_10_version_history\">Threshold 1 and Threshold 2\/November update<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>http:\/\/www.msftconnecttest.com\/connecttest.txt (from version 1607, also known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Windows_10_version_history\">the Redstone\/Anniversary update<\/a>\u00a0onwards)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The URI I saw actually redirects to MSN whereas the ones above return static text to indicate a successful connection.<\/p>\n<p>For those who want to know more, there&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/technet.microsoft.com\/en-gb\/library\/cc766017(v=ws.10).aspx\">a detailed technical reference on TechNet, which dates back to Windows Vista<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.technet.microsoft.com\/networking\/2012\/12\/20\/the-network-connection-status-icon\/\">an extensive blog post on the Network Connection Status Icon<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night, whilst working in the Premier Inn close to the office, I noticed the browser going to an interesting URI after I connected to the hotel Wi-Fi. \u00a0That URI was http:\/\/www.msftconnecttest.com\/redirect and a little more\u00a0research tells me it&#8217;s used\u00a0by Windows 10 to detect whether the PC has an Internet connection or not.
