{"id":752,"date":"2007-03-25T19:30:56","date_gmt":"2007-03-25T18:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/ssh-addendum.htm"},"modified":"2007-03-25T23:07:10","modified_gmt":"2007-03-25T22:07:10","slug":"ssh-addendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/ssh-addendum.htm","title":{"rendered":"SSH addendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Since my recent posts about using SSH to securely remote administer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/secure-remote-administration-of-a-mac-os-x-computer-from-within-windows.htm\">Mac OS X<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/secure-remote-administration-of-a-linux-computer-from-within-windows.htm\">Linux<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2007\/03\/secure-remote-administration-of-a-windows-computer.htm\">Windows<\/a> computers, a couple of extra points have come up that are probably worth noting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To use the console interactively, it may be better to use PuTTY (<code>putty<\/code>) than PuTTY Link (<code>plink<\/code>).  In seems that PuTTY Link is fine for setting up a tunnel and then connecting using VNC, RDP or another remote control method but I found that control codes were echoed to the console window when I connected to a Linux of Windows computer and the command line experience was generally better using PuTTY interactively.  This is because (quoting from <a href=\"http:\/\/the.earth.li\/~sgtatham\/putty\/0.59\/htmldoc\/Chapter7.html\">the PuTTY documentation<\/a>) &#8220;The output sent by the server will be written straight to your command prompt window, which will most likely not interpret terminal <a title=\"i7\" name=\"i7\"><\/a>control codes in the way the server expects it to [&#8230;] Interactive connections like this are not the main point of Plink&#8221;.<\/li>\n<li>For another method of generating SSH keys, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sshkeygen.com\/\">an online SSH key generator is available<\/a> (I haven&#8217;t tried it myself).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since my recent posts about using SSH to securely remote administer Mac OS X, Linux and Windows computers, a couple of extra points have come up that are probably worth noting: To use the console interactively, it may be better to use PuTTY (putty) than PuTTY Link (plink).
