Mac OS X doesn&#8217;t show hidden files by default (it all gets a bit messy otherwise &#8211; although they are visible in a Terminal shell); however I found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slashdotdash.net\/articles\/2006\/12\/02\/show-hidden-files-in-mac-os-x-finder\">a tip which details the commands to run in order to show hidden files in the Finder<\/a> (this can be run using a standard user account):<\/p>\n<p><code>defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE<br \/>\nkillall Finder<\/code><\/p>\n<p>To return to the default display, run:<\/p>\n<p><code>defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE<br \/>\nkillall Finder<\/code><\/p>\n<p>I did find an <a href=\"http:\/\/mac.softpedia.com\/get\/System-Utilities\/HiddenFiles.shtml\">application to display hidden files<\/a> too but why bother if a couple of commands will do the trick?  Even better, there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/macosx\/features\/automator\/\"><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/automatorworld.com\/archives\/show-hidden-files\/\">workflow to show hidden files<\/a> using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apple.com\/macosx\/features\/automator\/\">Automator<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I use hidden files (such as .htaccess) extensively on my website, so I needed to be sure that they were included with my local backup copy.
