I also commute by bike where practical &#8211; I have a Brompton folding bike, which has caused some amusement in the office (think <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/iplayer\/episodes\/b05s9g2q\/w1a\">BBC W1A<\/a>) &#8211; though I mostly work from home and commuting by bike up two flights of stairs might be a bit tricky\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"256\" height=\"197\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/uploads\/image.jpeg?resize=256%2C197&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Image result for w1a brompton\" class=\"wp-image-7810\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/uploads\/image.jpeg?w=256&amp;ssl=1 256w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/uploads\/image.jpeg?resize=250%2C192&amp;ssl=1 250w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 256px) 100vw, 256px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With more bikes in the family than I care to admit (I have at least 5 at the moment and my eldest son\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.velominati.com\/\">n+1 count<\/a> is increasing too), I\u2019ve been trying to do more of the servicing myself (or with my son) to reduce costs. This has been spurred on by a few things including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>I needed to call on help from others to swap pedals at a race recently. I had the skills but not the tools. I then bought the right tools\u2026<\/li><li>I discovered that drive chains are supposed to be shiny, not grimy and that they perform much better when you know how to remove and degrease the chain, cassette, chainrings, etc. A chain cleaner is great, but if the other components are still covered in gunk then the chain quickly turns black again.<\/li><li>I also had to remove the cranks and bottom bracket on a bike as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.markwilson.co.uk\/blog\/2019\/04\/stuck-seatpost.htm\">another project<\/a> so the bike-specific toolkit has been growing.<\/li><li>My son was able to use his new knowledge and my tools to swap components between frames.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, it needn\u2019t be expensive. Much as I would like to have a wall of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.parktool.com\/\">Park Tool<\/a> tools, that\u2019s a stretch too far for my wallet, so this is what&#8217;s in the toolkit so far:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-pro-pedal-wrench\/\">Pedal wrench<\/a>.<\/li><li>Allen keys (hex wrenches).<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-essential-torque-wrench-set\/\">Torque wrench<\/a> (I should really have a big torque wench too).<\/li><li>Ratchet spanner and an assortment of bits.<\/li><li>1\/2\u201d socket bar.<\/li><li>1\u201d socket.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-chainring-peg-spanner\/\">Chainring peg spanner<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-cassette-lockring-tool\/\">Cassette lockring tool (Shimano)<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/park-tool-bottom-bracketcassette-lockring-tool-bbt-5fr-11\/\">Cassette lockring tool (Campagnolo)<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-chain-whip\/\">Chain whip<\/a>.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-chain-rivet-extractor\/\">Chain rivet extractor<\/a>.<\/li><li>Chain link open\/close tool.<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/x-tools-x-tools-pro-shimano-bb-tool\/\">Shimano bottom bracket removal tool<\/a> (some bikes may need a different tool).<\/li><li>(All the usual stuff like inner tubes, pumps, etc.)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.screwfix.com\/p\/no-nonsense-heavy-duty-degreaser-5ltr\/88668\">Degreaser<\/a>.<\/li><li>Lube (I&#8217;m no longer using Muck Off wet and dry lubes but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiggle.co.uk\/morgan-blue-extra-dry-lube-mtb-cyclo-cross\/\">I&#8217;ve had good results with Morgan Blue products<\/a>).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>BTW, almost every task I\u2019ve needed to complete has had a short video available on YouTube to tell me how to do it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/user\/globalcyclingnetwork\">GCN is consistently good<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Note: Wiggle rejected me for their affiliate marketing scheme, so there is no financial incentive for me if you click the links above &#8211; they are purely for the convenience of readers!<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anyone who regularly reads my blog or follows me on Twitter will know that cycling (or being a &#8220;cyclist&#8217;s Dad&#8221;) is one of my major activities.
